P5163931 Hawaiian hawk
The day after the previous sighting of the Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius, known in Hawaiian as 'Io), we went back to the same spot, and the same hawk (or possibly a different one) was right there on the wire again, now with much better lighting.
This spot was on Route 130, on the way to Kalapana, where they have the viewing spot for the current lava flow from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. About a mile or two before you reach the end of Route 130, this is one of the low power lines on the left side of the road (after the power lines switch from right side to left side, and after the poles become short instead of tall). The map link is a rough estimate. Update (7/14/2008): Looks like drweber82 caught a similar view at the same spot a few weeks later. CommentsKaleomokuokanalu
