It's really not a lot smaller than a regular skull. There's way more meat on one's head than you'd think. In fact, the volume of a whole head is MORE than what 16 boxes of Jell-o take up. I don't know exactly how much more, because I ran out at 16.

the Indy style crystal skulls have that super elongated Mayan style head thing going on that makes them bigger than your typical human skull is what I meant by the pygmie comment - although a real world crystal skull would be about the size of this.
