The Rough Guide on Coromandel:

It's known to many simply as the jumping-off point for the Coromandel Walkway, 57km away amid the jagged landscape of the northern peninsula, but it's worth taking time to soak up the atmosphere of this old gold town and ride its scenic railway into the local hills.

The town and peninsula took their name from an 1820 visit by the British Admiralty supply ship Coromandel, which called into the harbour to obtain kauri spars and masts. A more mercenary European invasion was precipitated by the 1852 discovery of gold, near Driving Creek, in the northern part of town.
