Lucky 13 Bee Block - Rock Road to Kansas

Lucky 13 Bee Block - Rock Road to Kansas

My first paper pieced block! We were provided with the green background, instructions and a template. I broke out my light box for this to line up all the layers of fabric under the template.

The scraps are all my own and it was a challenge to find enough pieces to make this. I'm not a big scrap person mostly because I haven't been quilting that long, and because I like to make new fabric with my scraps so they don't stick around long. Also it was requested that we not use red, brown or black and given that I've made three red, black and brown quilts that didn't leave me many scraps to play with!

Overall I liked the paper piecing, but man, this is so wasteful of the backing fabric. Just less than half of the fabric ended up in the scrap pile.

Lucky 13 Bee Block - Green, a curve, a smidge of black, and add your own hot colour.

I think I hit all those marks...

I've never sewn a curve before so I really didn't know what I was doing. I took the instructions from the waverunner quilt, sewed the strips together and ironed the bejeebus out of them, then squared up. It worked but I wouldn't recommend it for something more large scale with this much of a curve. After that I went pretty traditional with the construction, piecing together strips to make a log-cabin-ish block. What's this construction called? I'm blanking.

Cocoon

One thing copious red light at shows is good for, neat translucency effects when you convert to black and white.

Having problems with tip wear? I was, with polish that would chip of sometimes within hours. The Internet said this stuff was the bomb. The Internet was not wrong. 2 days of typing and no tip wear! Best $8 spent on nail polish ever.
