Its hard to describe Bonfire Night / Guy Fawkes Night to non-British people.
In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the House of Parliament during a visit by James I.
Since then, houses and parties across the country burn an effigy of
Guy on a bonfire.
And light fireworks.
Tonight is, as expected, a bright and noisy one. The sky is full of fireworks and random gardens around are glowing with bonfires. Each with a Guy (made of paper or straw and dressed in old clothing) sitting on top.
I have fond memories of being invtied to garden parties as a kid. Standing around eating sausages (Yup!), toffee apples, and sweets - watching the effigy of Guy burn to a cinder - whilst waving a little sparkler.
And then getting frightened while the Dad of the whoevers house it was, set off a couple of fireworks.
