I'm surprised that thing is still there. Must mean someone's going to renovate it and make something swank out of it.
Wonderful photo. I love the curve against the blue and the lines of cloud. Well-composed.

yeh, that's a great view of this structure... weren't some movie people using these old hangers? or were those different ones. Huge space, perfect for the right project, but unless someone maintains, it will fall.
always wanted to poke around out there, but never got the time while in town.

Anole: I hope they do use it because it's the original hangar for the airport and is a wonderful example of a 1930s wooden hangar. I found this article stating it was "restored" a while back - might explain the random bright right supports in there. The article isn't dated (bad website!), so I don't know if the plans to "save it" are still valid or not. (History of airport . Construction picture .)
Zzzzt!Zzzzt!: Newer hangars have been used for filming. They were more the standard, modern metal structures.
Thanks for the nice words about the photo!

Oh, Yay! I just found this :
" Other planned features in Lake Park include a community center, a natural amphitheatre, a restored historic hangar, a picnic grove, and a park pavilion."
The "Lake" would explain all the digging I saw.

@Zzzzt!Zzzzt!:
The "movie people" are Austin Studios / Austin Film Society sorts who operate out of the hangars on the north side of the old airport. I do work for them and they have at least 6 hangars that are used for everything from commercials to full-length features. Currently Quentin Tarantino has some sets there for "Grind House."

@mirsasha, Yay, indeed! Glad they plan to save and hope they follow through.
@Anole, cool deal! Thanks for the info. Haven't lived in Austin in a good while, but had heard someone was making use of the facilities. I worked on Blood Simple, back in the day, and am glad Austin continues supporting the film community (or vice versa, heh!).
