Conflict

Conflict by Rune T.
Primarily a little reaction to Flickr suddenly deciding to block some of my photos from public view. I found this out earlier today when I sent a link to one of the girls that have been so kind to pose for me so that she could see the comments on the photo.

To my great surprise the photo wasn't visible to her at all, and when I checked my photo stream from another browser I found that several of my photos doesn't show up unless you are logged in.

Slight nudity is of course a dangerous thing in parts of the world, so I don't really object to the blocking itself, but the fact that I haven't gotten any notification whatsoever about it happening annoys me a bit.

Read this section in the FAQ
www.flickr.com/help/filters/#252

I suspect that people will have flagged your photo as inappropriate which is how it came to the attention of the moderators.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "blocking", they announced the moderation feature some time back, and everyone's supposed to flag their own photos' safety leveles (click the "flag this photo" under the data on the right). If you don't flag yours, someone else (possibly offended by the shot) can ask the staff to review the safety level, which simply results in the "appropriate" level being applied to it. That is, it won't be "blocked" any more than if you yourself had assigned the same level...

As for the above comment about "pornographic streams" - as long as the persons posting the pornographic shots have the right to do so (own copyright, don't break law, etc), why should flickr kick them out? It never works out when some authority tries to determine the difference between artistic nudes and pornography. Now, if you feel offended by some picture, click the aforementioned "Flag this photo" and ask the staff to review the safety level. So, the same system of moderation works, without having to single out porn or whatever.

I hear ya Rune. Censorship sucks. Personally, I don't agree with it, but there are types who get offended at the drop of a hat. Usually uptight zealots of one brand or another. Personally, I find your work to be inspiring, and quite exceptional.

Super shots as always Rune.
Flickr pretty much allow anything on here and I'd defy another international site to be so lenient. They have organised things so as you the photographer moderate what you post and viewers can decide what they see. You can flag your photos safe, moderate, restricted and yet still keep them public. This lets you post anything pretty much. Anyone who wants to see the moderate or restricted ones can turn off their safety search.
I get fed up hearing about censorship on Flickr. Most folks have no idea what true censorship means yet bandy the word about liberally. Flickr are international and have to try and appreciate every country, culture, morality and law. I think they have come up with a pretty good solution.
The real problem is communication, they don't appear to have made it very obvious just how much control we have over our images and who can view. But it is all there to read in the community guidelines.

I'd moderate some of your pics, (see the 'flag this photo' to the right on the page) because if you don't, Flickr will turn around and 'unsafe' your account, which will mean no-one will be able to see anything publically. That would be a real shame.

it sucks the way they do things at times, a number of friends gave up and went to Ipernity because of it ...

love that b&w image. and i agree censorships do sucks big time. when i see those nude pictures, i think of it as art. i don't think of it as an offensive thing. i'd paint pictures of them. (I'm a part-time painter) you see my brother, Jae read and sees porn magazines all the time when he gets off from his work. (he bought them without telling our parents) and he and his friends enjoy every minute of and it's ashame that people are leaving because of that.

so I understand your concern about this. and I hope it goes well.

I am actually really pissed off by the introduction of censorship into Flickr. Because:

“Censorship in any form is the enemy of creativity, since it cuts off the life blood of creativity: ideas.”
Allan Jenkins

and also:
“Censorship reflects a society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime.”
Potter Stewart

not to forget what George Bernard Shaw said:
“The first condition of progress is the removal of censorship.”

@Cateva: it's not correct what you say "viewers can decide what they see"...
If I try to view certain Flickr groups (e.g. www.flickr.com/groups/asiangirls/pool/) I get the message "This group is not available to you."

That means Flickr decides what I can see! I have a Yahoo account in the domain yahoo.de and for this domain they block certain content.

Interesting is that all adults can go to any sex shop in Germany (.de) and buy any amount of porn he / she wants because the law allows that and the government trust adults to decide what they want to look at (of course there are also certain meaningful restriction such as child pornography, which is banned), but Flickr is preventing me from seeing erotic photographs. This is stupid.

Cateva  Pro User  says:

It is usually group admins i.e. Flickr members who decide what other Flickr members see, not Flickr themselves. Many groups are by invite only, some are private, the group admins choosing to do so because it prevents real pornography entering a group for artistic and erotic work (for example).
Flickr has to contend with various international cultures, beliefs and laws - in some countries/cultures where penalties are fierce - and like I said does that fairly well by asking members to put up what they want (child pornography/internet downloads and I hope, animal cruelty excluded) but flag it appropriately. As I said, it's a simple system, pretty much lets you post anything (allowing the most awful sex pictures to be here as a result), but the fault lies in that they haven't communicated the 'how to' very well.
As for me, I try to remember that just because I find something acceptable doesn't mean the rest of the world does and vice versa - personal taste does come into it as well of course. For example I don't have a personal problem with erotic photos or nudity celebrated in an art form but I do have a problem with people posting photos of guns and 'celebrating' gun ownership and hunting as a sport. I think western cultures have it pretty lenient but we need to remember difference. REAL censorship - people being tortured and murdered for their beliefs and opinions is where a stand should be made. Celebrate ownership of a camera and skill as a photographer and be grateful not to be tortured or murdered for it I say.

But "censorship" aside Rune, your photos are superb as always!

p.s. for anyone interested, this is the group to learn properly about how to manage your own account...it certainly opened my eyes to just how much Flickr really allows but how much their communication skills suck!
