The sun shines through

The sun shines through

The sun was shining from one side of the cathedral through to the other, illuminating this window from the inside. A rather unusual and pretty effect.

Monument of Thomas Deacon

Monument of Thomas Deacon

The monument of Thomas Deacon (died 1721), founder of a charity-school at Peterborough, and in many other ways a benefactor to the city. He reclines on the summit of his sarcophagus, attired in a Ramillies wig, and resting one hand on a skull, whilst with the other he points to the record of this virtues behind him (from "Handbook to the Cathedrals of England", by Richard John King, 1862).
Deacon was a wealthy wool merchant. In his Will he made provision for the setting up of a school to teach and instruct twenty poor boys to 'read, write and cast accounts'. The school was established in 1722 in Cowgate and became known as Mr Deacon's Charity School (from www.findagrave.com).

I am the vine, ye are the branches

I am the vine, ye are the branches

"I am the Vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in Me, the same shall bring forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing."
– John 15:5

The flat roof of the apse, like the eastern screen, has been excellently decorated from the designs of Mr. G. G. Scott. In the centre is the Saviour in majesty; surrounding Him, in medallions placed among the branches of a vine which clusters over the pale blue ground of the ceiling, are half-figures of the Apostles. The whole is bordered by an inscription: "I am the Vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in Me, the same shall bring forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing." (from "Handbook to the Cathedrals of England", by Richard John King, 1862).
