I have the bad habit of smoking in "exceptional circumstances," which originally meant when abroad (China or London); the scope of the exemption was expanded in a classic example of the slippery slope -a phenomenon I ordinarily do not believe in!- to include many, but not all vacations, and then again to include periods when people are visiting me.

Thus, though I quite smoking completely for six or seven years, I have in the past few years had a more checkered record (I want to spell that "reckerd").

There is an additional complication: when I am at the ranch I insist on "dipping," generally Skoal (now that Kodiak has changed their flavors). So when I am dipping, the addled addict's logic goes, who cares about smoking?

Etc. etc. etc. Last, let me note that ABBY IS A BAD INFLUENCE ON ME. Just today on my run I noticed a +20 BPM change in my heart rate, despite the cooler weather. PLUS TWENTY! Matt, that puts my ordinary jogging pace over my lactate threshold. What kind of shit is that?

Abby is hard on me.
