I like to think that when life handed me a whole boatload of lemons 5 years ago, I made lemonade of at least some of them...
5 years ago today I had "optimal debulking" cancer surgery. It was followed 3 weeks later by the first of six chemo treatments. The chances of recurrence were 80% and that made, and still makes, for some scary moments. Now that I made it to the 5-year mark, my chances of recurrence have dropped from 80% to 50% - I think. Statistics are a game I don't like to play much and after all, I was never good at math.
But I am pretty good at making lemonade. A lot of good things happened because of the cancer. First and foremost, it took my love for photography to a whole new level and made it easier for me to go public, rather than keep filing my photos in shoe boxes at home. I always say cancer unleashed me and digital cameras liberated me, in a way, that is very true.
Thanksgiving has never been the same. But rather than evoking bad memories of a truly dreadful time in my life, Thanksgiving has an extra special meaning to me now, special in a very good way. It makes me appreciate life so much more than I could have ever imagined; life and everything in it, including lemonades.
To all my friends and fellow flirckrites - have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
