Little Aleck's Mural
Crawfordville, GA (Taliaferro County) Copyright 2007 D. Nelson
The mural (which takes up the entire block) reminds us that Crawfordville is the home of Alexander H. Stephens aka "Little Aleck". Stephens was born and raised on a nearby farm and attended what would become UGA (where he shared a room with Dr. Long , inventor of anesthesia). He went on to become an extremely successful lawyer - in his 32 years of practice, not one of his clients (which incidentally included black slaves) charged with a capital crime was executed. Although he asked that the South remain loyal to the Union, Stephens was a slave owner himself and eventually served as Vice President of the Confederacy from 1861-1865. After the war, he served in the U.S. Congress until he was elected governor of Georgia in November 1882. Stephens was governor for only a few months - he died in March 1883 after a gate fell on him, crippling and eventually killing him.
