“Nexus” is looking for investors. The investment needed is patience and dedication. With no knowledge of earlier issues on which current plots are built, it takes both to enter the complicated world of Nexus. But it’s this complexity of plot and subplot, diverse and well-developed characters, and meticulous attention to detail that makes the investment worthwhile.
The dividend you earn will be hours of enjoyment from the finest science fiction series produced in comic books.
This highly imaginative series is set in a future where technological advances have outstripped progress in human morality. Nexus is a vigilante chosen to seek out and kill violators of an alien’s code of justice, a code that doesn’t reflect human logic.
In the current issue, Nexus must destroy the president of Scorporation, a multi-planet conglomerate on Mars that’s guilty of every corporate crime imaginable. Scorporation builds spaceships propelled by the telekinetic power of thousands of enslaved aliens called “heads” because they have no bodies. But to kill this man, Nexus must destroy 250 innocent lives as well. Defying his alien masters, Nexus solves this dilemma his own way only to discover that his solution is also flawed.
Mike Baron writes some of the most intriguing plots in comics, and escapes the error of cardboard characters in this series. Even his alien creatures have more distinctive personalities than many human superheroes.
Steve Rude’s art, though not technically superior, is an exciting blend of storytelling and often wildly creative design.
In many ways, this is a traditional comic book. But Baron and Rude do everything so well that they transcend the traditions on which “Nexus” builds. Their only weakness is a storyline that’s sometimes so complex it’s confusing, and scene changes are muddled. They must learn that less is more.
Don’t expect to understand everything in “Nexus” with the first issues you buy. Expect, however, to want to.
