Wooded Island, Jackson Park, Chicago by melancholic optimist

Wooded Island, Jackson Park, Chicago

In 1869, the renowned designers of New York's Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, were hired to lay out the 1055-acre Jackson Park. Olmstead’s vision for the original dune peninsula would be to turn it into what is now Wooded Island. Much of the surrounding area was dredged and filled creating the island sanctuary that exists today. When laying out the fair, Olmstead wanted the island to be regarded as a “nature sanctuary”, a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the big event (Chigago park district 2009). Kodak tri-x @ 800 ei, Ilford MG paper + filter #3. View On Black

NYC Subway driver by melancholic optimist

NYC Subway driver

I descend the stairs away from white light and heat, down onto the 23rd St. station platform. A train already stands there, but it's an R, and I must take the W. I notice the driver chatting casually with someone. Maybe they are acquaintances, more likely not. He also notices me with my camera and flashes a quick smile. I fire the shutter and grin back. He looks friendly and content. But his job is to sew the dense urban fabric together, so the R speeds away. Due to the echoes from tunnel walls and the Doppler effect the receding train's noise turns to sublime rumble before it fades into the darkness. View On Black
