Defenders of 1913!

This cartoon probably seems a bit obscure if you don't live in Massachusetts or New York. Basically, although same-sex marriage has been legal for Massachusetts residents since 2004, out-of-state couples were out of luck. An archaic 1913 on the books prohibited couples whose marriages were not legal in their home states from marrying in Mass. The law (which Mitt Romney was a big fan of) was likely designed to prevent out-of-state interracial marriages. I drew the cartoon when a repeal was being considered. The Senate has repealed and now it's up to the House. Good riddance to bad legal rubbish!

Dialogue: ...explain why Massachusetts should keep a law prohibiting out-of-state same-sex couples from marrying. Heterosexual rights crusaders (It'd be just my luck to finally get engaged and have to fight over the reception hall with hairdressers from harlem!). Confused slippery slopers (what's next: marriage between the races?). Glitter Haters (Boston will become the sparkling, hedonistic Las Vegas of same-sex marriage! And I'm a terrible Elvis impersonator!) Rabid sports fans (we'll be overrun by gay-marrying Yankees lovers!)
