Dry Falls Appalachian Mountains Hemlock Dieback

I over saturated this a bit to make a point. Among all the color this fall there is a die-back among the Hemlocks. In the picture you can see a grayish hue to the trees center and right . These are Hemlocks that are suffering from an infestation of Woolly Adelgid. This is a quote from the US Forestry web page.

"The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) Adelges tsugae was first described in western North America in 1924 and first reported in the eastern United States in 1951 near Richmond, VA. In the absence of natural control elements in eastern North America, this introduced insect pest attacks both eastern (Canadian) and Carolina hemlock which are often damaged and killed within a few years of becoming infested. HWA is now established from northeastern Georgia to southeastern Maine and as far west as eastern Kentucky and Tennessee."

I have seen a couple of die backs here in the Southern Appalachians due to a variety of reasons...some natural and some strictly man made.... its sad to know there is nothing you can do sometimes.
