Brass Goggles

Brass Goggles by mikest.
Black rubber, brass, distressed leather, dichroic glass, and ten screws. Finally finished 'em.

(Several people have asked for a kit of some sort, I'm looking into what it would take. I will post on the Brass Goggles blog if I figure it out. --mikest)

These are fantastic. The finish is looking very nice, subtle aging. I am incredibly impressed.

I'm curious about the dichroic glass lenses. Did you have to order 'em specially? Or are they standard parts that are commonly available and you've re-purposed here?

mikest  Pro User  says:

anachrocomputer: they are a standard part. 43mm highend cyberlight filters from apollo. however, i don't recommend them because they're rather fragile and will shatter if impacted.

these are a work of art, quite eye catching, even at just a glance. Fascinating if one word were used to describe them, at least for me at any rate.

What would be involved in making prescription lenses for these? Could I simply bring the goggles to my local eyewear shop and let them go to town?

I'd love to have some stylish goggles like these when riding my bike. When it's windy - especially in winter - the air curls around my glasses and makes me tear up like you wouldn't believe. Goggles are clearly necessary!

DCE: yes, an optician can make pretty much anything to spec, so long as one is willing to pay for it. I've had estimates everywhere from 50 to 150 for a pair. the various coatings can drive the price up pretty rapidly.

these steampunk goggles are amazing!!!!!! it's the finest piece of work i've seen by far. how much time was put into this project and also how much would something like this cost? i'd love to create something similar but i don't have the machines to do it. Oh my God!!! I seriously am obsessed with how you made this! any plans of posting the steps on instructables? could i buy a pair from you? i can't sleep.... i can't sleep!

Those are very droolworthy. I would also like to add my expression of interest in a kit to those already expressed. When it comes to things that gorgeous, money is no object.

i've just discovered this - fantastic bit of work! if i could get a pair, or a kit that's not too hard to finish off (no tools and bugger-all-squared experience with anything of the sort, alas), i don't know how i'd be able to restrain myself from obtaining them.

A good result, although I would have been tempted to use brass cheese head screws rather than the posidrive ones.

I'm curious, what is the diameter of the lenses/frames? I'd love to see a shot of you, or someone, wearing them for scale.
