New Mexico Landscape

We got our new camera this week - Digital Rebel XT. Opted for the EF-S 17-85 IS lens. So far we Love it!

We drove up toward the mountains and happened on this little back road. The light was catching the top of the shrubs just right.

Great shot. So much detail and perfect lighting. I feel the same way sometimes. You go to beautiful places with a good camera and it is hard to take bad photos. But, you have to have an eye for it, as well.

So far I like everything about the camera. Since I've had it, I've taken 425 shots on one charge. It's a dream to use. The autofocus and image stabilization scream quality.

The EF-S 17-85 IS USM is awesome. It DOES have some problems at the widest angles, but they're fixable with software.

I've only had it a week, but so far I'm a hearty endorser.

Some have said that it is a "soft" lens, ie. hard to get crisp due to the IS mechanism. I have no experience with it, but a friend has one. That might be splitting hairs. Looks amazing to me from your photos. I'm interested in an even wider angle lens since I like that look for landscapes. They are pricey, though.

The lens is a little soft around the edges at it's extreme wide angles (17-24 or 28, or so). All the serious reviewers report that. Also, it has a little chromatic abberation in heavy backlight, and barrel distortion at wide angle. The imperfections are most pronounced at wide angles. But I love this lens! It's far better than any other lens I've every had.

As far as softness due to IS - hmmm - that's harder to answer. I haven't seen any definitive, scientific studies on that under controlled conditions. I know that there are some elements in the lens that move to compensate for the motion, so it's concievable that the way that's done only works at the focal distance or middle of the image or something. I'm not sure about that.

I made my decision primarily based on reviews posted here: www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?p roduct=222 and a similar deal at collection of reviews at photo.net. Of course, if you talk to 10 experts, you get 10 different answers, and I think the quality of opinions varies widely on internet based forums. But the consensus is this is a solid performer that's slightly overpriced.

I got mine last Wednesday, but I've only had it out twice as the weather's been lousy.
Hopefully we'll have better weather this weekend. We've really had mostly bad weather this year, I'm going stir-crazy!
