If you tell Apple about it, let them use it in one of their ads, maybe they'll give you a new one! :P RIGHT.

Erm, clarification, because then they could talk about how insanely durable it is.

Thats not bad for a phone. Now it's been down the steps, on the shop floor, bounced off a door a few times, and ran over by a semi.

Not quite Ford tough...? are you sure? I somehow doubt any Ford would ever survive coming from under a semi truck! I doubt anything out there would survive a semi run-over.

As for the original poster, has Apple approached you already about this phone? If I were you, I'd wait first what they offer and then ask for:

iPods (Touches or Nanos) for members of my family;
a MBP for myself;
a MB for my better half;
an iMac (20" is big enough) for the home;
an AppleTV (just for the hell of it)
and, of course, a replacement iPhone.

Of course, it being Apple, there's a strong chance they just might come up with a very similar offer by themselves...

They haven't approached me yet. A few blogs have picked it up, so I don't know exactly where Apple would find this story from.. perhaps I should get in touch with them.

You really believe Apple would offer all that gear for the phone? That baffles me... maybe its worth more to them than I thought!

I just spoke with a guy from Apple - apparently they aren't as interested in using it for promo as I thought. The PR rep himself was fascinated, but he called me back and said his direct manager doesn't really care.

Odd response, I thought. I felt like this was the absolute best real-world crash test out there. It doesn't get much better than this.

Where did you post your original, unedited narrative? I have this photo and one other sandwiched between iPodNN's article and iPhonefreak's article.

Congratulations! I've posted this photo to my tumblelog!

They probably aren't going to be too thrilled to use it in an ad when they see the jailbroken software.

I wouldn't think so either, but I sent these pictures to a couple reps at Apple Corporate and none of them even mentioned it. I run it on AT&T, so they really shouldn't have TOO big of a problem.

If they do choose to use it, I can just uninstall those 4 programs and put the factory black background back on and nobody would be able to tell anyway.

I think the problem for Apple here is that if they start using your story - which is a fantastic story, by the way - then all sorts of people will start rushing to Apple Stores saying their supposedly tough iPhone broke demanding a replacement.

I doubt Apple would want to use it in an ad because that would be endorsing it as semi-proof. That would be a customer service and/or legal nightmare.

It should be interesting to see how the LCD looks over the next few weeks. I can see what looks like crush damage to the screen, most notably -centre right top-. Mind you, that it even is working is quite remarkable. My cellphones have gotten much kinder treatment and still have issues. I can't imagine what my Moto would be like if it was run over by just my foot, let alone muliti-ton vehicles.

Apple won't use this as PR. First, they already get all the free PR they'd ever want from this via blogs, Digg, etc. Second, if they claimed the iPhone to be so tough they'd immediately get hit by 10 class action lawsuits suing them for false advertising. Third, they'd get inundated by other people who have done something stupid with their iPhone, either by accident or intentionally, and want to get money so Apple can use it in an ad. Fourth, toughness is not the main selling point. Even though it is tough as nails, certainly would blow a N95 to pieces in a high speed collision.

That said - great story!! Thanks for sharing!

Nice story, but I don't think Apple will touch this because the phone is jailbroken looking at your home screen. That's how Apple rolls.

Ummmm... it's a JAILBROKEN iPhone... of course they aren't going to use it! Heck, they are probably rallying a legal team now to sue him for using it! Gotta' love the Apple...

If apple wanted to use it for a commercial they would simply run a system restore on it. It's really no big deal. He hasn't even SIM unlocked it from the looks of things.

With all due respect, he reason they aren't interested is that you my dear Mr Beauchamp, have already given Apple all the advertising they need on this - for FREE.

Why should they pay for what is already being linked to and clicked on a million times? Next time something like this occurs - keep it zipped and contact them directly.

As for the idea that they would not use it somehow due to false advert claims, that's hogwash. That's why god invented DISCLAIMERS. Remember the old ads with "I saved Christmas" etc. They could do the same here with no claims as to survivability, etc. Just let the dude tell his story and show the end result.

Mike,

Sorry to hear about your phone. I would think Apple would have more interest in it.

Question: I am assuming that your phone was jailbroken since you have additional apps on your phone.

How did you get the wallpaper to show up with the icons?
Posted 18 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Mike Beauchamp says:

One of the icons on the springboard is to completely customize everything about the phone. When it gets no service, instead of saying "No Service" mine says "Go climb a tree -- again". The background wallpaper is just another customizable option through that program. I believe its called Summerboard.

My phone was dropped on the street (not the first time), everything works except the SIM CARD, so guess something went haywire inside the bloody thing......looks like it will be a very expensive Ipod from now on...

Mike, great Pics! I love my iPhone and everything about it. One thing I'd like to know is: What's the four icons shown on the bottom row of the Home screen above?
