"Miranda Joseph, star surfer of this event and mentor to many of the youngsters who admire and adore her."
Following is the Bay News report 3/24/2010 on this event, from p. 29. "Lady wave riders from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara performed in the third annual All Girl Cayucos Pier Classic Surf Contest March 20 at the Cayucos Pier.
The contest featured divisions for short boards and long boards with a special mom and grom division that featured a crew of young competitors — one who rode waves perched on his mother’s back.
In girls category, the long board division was won by Annette Reder from Morro Bay. Pismo Beach’s Christine Bare was second, Kyra Joseph of Santa Margarita placed third, while Sierra Emrick of Los Osos was fourth. In short board, Bare was first, Emrick took second, while Los Osos Kristen McClay and Katie Dragaer (no home town given) were third and fourth.
In the wahini long board division, Cayucos’ Taran Freeh bested Miranda Joseph of Santa Margarita. Santa Cruz res- ident Robin Zeuf was third, followed by Shell Beach resi- dents Christy Serpa and Colleen Gnos and Jennifer Blonder of Grover Beach. The shortboard division saw
Miranda Joseph top Joni Anderson of Arroyo Grande. Blonder was third, with Annette Reder, Taran Freeh and Silvia Kohler rounding out the heat.
The hard charging grom divisions were topped by Arroyo Grande’s Victoria Burke (10-years-old) and Mariah Zepeta (12) with Evie Burke (8) and Hannah Minardi (13) also surfing well in the finals.
In the mom and grom division, first place went to Becky French and
daughter followed by Gnos and her son. The contest had over 30 contestants and was a benefit
for the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. A portion of the proceeds went to help fund women’s shelters in the county.
“Great day, great waves and a great vibe,” said contest organizer Steve Hennigh, owner of the Good Clean Fun surf shop in Cayucos. “The event was full of good, clean fun.”
Zeuf (KPIG Radio’s “Girl in The Curl”) kept the day on a positive high as she MC’ed the contest from the shop’s sun drenched balcony.
After the final heat was over, contestants and spectators retired to Good Clean Fun’s art adorned warehouse across the street to stroll among the wares of the Craftanistas. Hennigh awarded beautiful, hand made, glass trophies crafted by Los Osos, artist Ted Emrick.
