Living in a van, down by the Mission.

Snapped with the iPhone this weekend on my walk over to the Apple Store for a talk on, of all things, iPhone street photography, by local street shooters Travis Jensen and Brad Evans.

I've been finding that I use the iPhone lately for most photos during bright afternoon light and tend to switch to the DSLR when the light gets a bit lower. I have been trying my hand at some night shooting on the street with the iPhone, though, with pretty variable success so far. All in all, I've found the iPhone to be a good complement to the Canon. It definitely can't do everything, but in certain situations, it puts out some really nice shots.

I'm starting to shoot with the DSLR a bit more, lately. I suppose my break is winding down. I've been testing out a new 85mm, lately, and for the most part, I've found myself disappointed. Perhaps I should have rented one first.

This is one of the few that I've actually been sort of happy with. I think I imagined it would be much better at low light shooting, but it seems to be a bit long for most handheld shots at night, despite the large aperture. I'm also finding that it's just a bit too long for the type of shooting I like to do. This one was taken from across the street, way farther than I like to be from my subjects (although I'd have needed to stand in the street to get a similar shot with the 50mm, so perhaps this one will at least keep me from getting run over).

I hear that it's a great portrait lens, though. I'll be sure to try it out a bit more in that realm and hopefully find it's niche in my camera bag. I'm not so sure I'll be carrying it around all the time, though.

Shot with my iPhone tonight on a walk across SF to get home. I actually didn't like this one that much on the phone, so it didn't go to Instagram, but I happened to be backing things up tonight and looked at this one full size. At the smaller size on the phone, I missed the little person way down there at the end. That person totally makes the photo work for me now.

An old shot now, taken last summer wandering around outside AT&T Park on a slow night. I just found it while working on organizing my storage. I like the starburst from the field lights through the big glove.

The season is just around the corner. :)
