Polystyrene hand

Polystyrene hand by michelle3duk.
Polystyrene hand.
I made this on a workshop at Emergency Exit Arts in London, learning a bit about making large-scale puppet body parts.

Poly styrene? Tell me more...this is not "styrofoam" is it? Or...is it one of those insulating spray foams....that you shot into a glove mold?

I am quite interested in this. would like to make one for display purposes (at craft shows for my jewellry)

Hello!
Thanks for your nice comments on my new work.

Styrofoam is a type of polystyrene I think. The polystyrene I know is just the standard rigid white stuff that comes in big blocks and is used to pack TVs, printers etc. It's not great for fine detail, but good for big shapes. The hand I made is larger-than-life, about 30cm long.
You can carve and shape polystyrene using, for example, a wood saw, bread knife, craft knife and surform tool. Or a hot wire. Makes a hell of a mess though, and isn't very healthy - we worked in a screened off area wearing masks and overalls.

Wow, Michelle. I have tried cutting styrofoam. You are right about the mess. I gave up. I did not have a hot wire cutter, and I do not know what a "surform tool " is.

This hand is so smooth...I just couldn't imagine that is WAS indeed that white packing foam the world knows, and loves to have.
Absolutely tremendous job....but I don't think I will be trying this although this stuff is everywhere....especially right after Christmas...its in nearly every trash bin.

In my area they do not recycled styrofoam. Not "profitable." That really makes me mad because there is more it than any other type of trash in my opinion.

A surform tool is a bit like a small cheese grater with a handle.
