etenwinkel, I plant about 6 weeks ahead of "normal" planting time with my wall-o-waters.

It's just now getting to the iffy time for planting and my seedlings have taken hold, growing like crazy (in a week there is about 3 times as much poking out of the top of that wall-o-water), blooms popping up everywhere and bees busy pollinating.

A few winters ago we had a hard freeze 3 days after I put some plants in the ground and I went out in the morning and the water was frozen solid like an otter pop that I just pulled straight up and out but the plants were fine.

If you've ever slept in a snow cave, it is the same principle.

As a matter of fact I did sleep in a snow cave. Not something I'd recommend though for a longer period of time but it beats sleeping out in the open ;-)
