How Quickly Modernism Needs Refurbishing
I.M. Pei's East Wing for the National Gallery in Washington, DC, was completed in 1978. 33 years later it needs a new skin? Yes, he used an experimental wall system. And people just won't remember that some experiments don't work.
John Russell Pope's building next door? Holding up just fine after 60 years.
