luckily they don't have a social website, right? are they blocking worldcat and librarything?

I get it but I don't have to like it. I have to admit that a majority of our patrons head for these sties as well but with our queue software in place it's not as big of a problem. That and were a smaller group of libraries. Now if they all had Laptops ... Yeah that would work :)

I asked about Flickr and access to blogs... those are not blocked. I should have asked about LibraryThing!

I just called: the lab person said the only two blocked are Facebook and MySpace. He was very nice.

Their sign is not very accurate, then. This still bums me out.

I think it would be funny if someone photoshopped in a picture of someone using MySpace on that sign. (Would be tough to make it look good, though, because of the reflection ...)

It's so sad that ignorance prevails with these types of policy issues.

I hope they don't think that banning these sites is a long term solution -- I wonder how their decision, and all this public dialog, is going to affect their long-range goals. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I can only assume that they have already talked w/city officials about solutions for crowd control ($ for space/equipment/staff) and were probably told "no"...?

Dang, I wish we could do a library renovation/funding "reality show" to build them a ginormous computer lab w/more staff to make it all better. My hope is that where funding is bleak, fierce creativity can save the day. I wish them luck with finding a more inclusive solution to this challenge -- keep us posted!

They're not blocking facebook and myspace - they're blocking bands from sharing their new songs with patrons; authors from sharing book tour stops; indie movie makers from sharing thier short flicks; other Indiana libraries; and individuals.

And... they're being terribly selfish. They've put themselves first, and their patrons second.

one other thought - how does this work with filtering/CIPA? With CIPA, you HAVE TO unblock sites at the patrons' request... ie., "I want to access/my friend's site/my favorite author's site/my mom's site... and you have it blocked." Would they THEN unblock it? And if not... could they be sued? Wowsa.
