I think it's better without the bottom storey. It looks so well balanced this way.

It's always a bit of a gamble how the souvenir will fit in with the background, this was a nice coincidence that the bottom fell off and it worked so well. I was being engulfed by a crowd of tourists as I took the picture - you can imagine their bemusement!

I found your site via FARK. What a great concept for a Flickr set. Perhaps the French should paint the tiers of the Tour as in your model or Blue, White, and Red?
Nice work.

Great set, this one has to be my favourite though. I live in Paris and see the Eiffel Tower everyday and it's nice to see it in a brand new light! How did the bottom fall off anyway?

Its one of those tacky kits which you push together to assemble it. The problem is that you have to squish the plastic tongues to push them into the slots. You think everything is fine but behind your back, so to speak, the plastic tongues are slowly but steadily returning to their original shape which means they are freeing themselves from their slots. No sooner do you get one storey fixed and start work on the next it starts to fall apart. So you are trying to hold this incredibly recalcitrant and delicate structure together and photograph it at the same time...

It would lack impact if the souvenir still had the bottom storey. It's important to see some of the actual landmark so that we can marvel at how well you've positioned the shot, and see clearly that you are somewhere significant, not just holding up a souvenir somewhere else.

Did it take long to find the right place and compose the shot?

Strangely enough this one was quite tricky. I started rom theextreme end of the grass swathe which leads to the back of it. First I did the brass model and then started to put together the model. I really had to get surprisingly close because although the model is big, the thing itself is huge!

Great set! Love how the new tower blends with the old. In London I took a picture of St. Paul's Cathedral from a bus which almost exactly corresponded to a Victorian-era print at home. I didn't intend it, but how fun to compare them at home and see all the changes.
