"This ancient Maya site is located at
the western frontier of the lowland Maya
region. While the name Palenque comes from a
nearby village, it is possible that the
village was named after the ancient city or
something similar sounding - bahlam kin -
jaguar sun - the place where the sun descends
into the underworld, the realm of the
jaguar."

Some says Palenque means Walls. Geographicly,
this place, with the moutains behind, act
like a wall. Very good photo, btw!

It's good to see Palenque again.
I once lived there and traveled the Ruta
Maya for several months.
Your photo is a perfect record of the scene,
and very similar to the place I first saw 35
years ago!
