Are you thinking of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? You must be. That's the English name. I see what you mean.

It's hard to believe that even with the recent run up in housing prices (2000-06) that there could be so much empty land, when people are in need of housing even more.

Van Nuys, yeah, it's pretty amazing. Development is creeping its way across the city, however. There is considerable development within a block or two of this building.

This is actually the current house of former Ald. Arenda Troutman. It's the last remaining of a set of rowhouses. She owns the vacant lots.

Great shot. Earlier comment said now ex-Ald. Troutman lived there and owned the vacant lots. She's now headed for another big house.

I think the owner spend too much money on land or they might have land inherit.

Someone up there mentioned they thought this was the house from Child's Play -- it isn't. Based on familiar buildings in the background of that shot, the house used in that scene has since been torn down. It was in Bronzeville, not Woodlawn. A lot of South Side graystones and rowhouses went the way of the bulldozer in the 90's.

This photograph is a great example of how environmental and preconceived notions of a place can shape the story a photo might tell. This isn't a sad, decaying house in reality...but this photo sure makes you think it is. Yes, it is smack between two vacant lots but a nice, middle class family lives in this house and has for a while. They've got dogs. We greet them daily (I live across the street). The whole rest of the block is nice, middle class, well kept houses. This is actually a really nice part of the neighborhood and this is a really nice houss (has a baby grand in the window when the shades aren't drawn).

      Thank you, everyone.

Yes, Troutman lived there and famously paid $711 in taxes in 2006 (when this photo was taken) on the vacant lot on to the south -- and only $485 on the house. That was far less than her neighbors' rate.

@luvnelmo, that's exactly what's so interesting to me about this project. One can explore perception and history of the built environment through the framing and juxtaposition of these buildings. Of course, I'm not sure how long you've lived across the street, but Woodlawn was considerably different just a few years ago -- and I hope this photograph demonstrates the renovation and dramatic history of the place.
