An Unusual Letter

An Unusual Letter by metroblossom.
I received this unusual letter in my mailbox recently, but I didn't open it until this evening. It's a hand-written, proselytizing letter (with supplementary tract) written by someone I don't know. Check out the bigger versions to read the text.

Does anyone know any more about this kind of proselytizing? Is this a common Jehovah's Witnesses tactic, etc.?

(Obviously, I obscured the sender's address.)

i would have assumed mormon from the name...but on google it is a watchtower. crazy. it's totally strange regardless...and yes, kinda scary. i liked the site's response to the questions in the letter.
"To answer these questions, we need to know the origin of marriage and the family. For if these had an Originator—a Creator—family members should look to him for guidance, since he would surely know best how we can enjoy family life to the full.

Interestingly, many believe that the family arrangement had no Originator. The Encyclopedia Americana says: "Some scholars are inclined to trace the origin of marriage to pairing arrangements of animals below man." Yet, Jesus Christ spoke of the creation of man and woman. He quoted as authority the early Bible record and said: "What God has yoked together let no man put apart."—Matthew 19:4-6.

So Jesus Christ is right."

i have never totally understood why telling them you're an atheist, mormon, methodist, etc means they'll still try to convert you...but if you tell them you're jewish you're off the list.

*and now i'm thoroughly confused on the jehovah's/mormon relation.

I received a handwritten letter a few years ago with a pamphlet enclosed. Turns out, it was from the sister of this girl I went to HS with. I called up my old friend, we met for lunch and I explained again that I wouldn't be converting to Jehovah Witness.... I suspect it's from them.

I've told the door-knocking JW's that I was an anthropology major and strongly believe in evolution. It seemed to catch them so off guard that they didn't know what to say and turned and walked away. I'm sure they did some heavy-duty praying for me that night.

Evangelical sects of Christianity believe that it's God's will for them to spread "the word" and convert people. Some people take that to mean just live a good life. Others seem to think that it means writing letters, knocking on doors or going on crusades.

How'd they get your address? Probably by driving down the street. Or, more cynically, they bought a mailing list and some Sunday afternoon the flock wrote letters to the list.

I received a letter like this a few years ago myself. My neighborhood used to be a regular haunt for Jehovah's Witnesses. Not so much now. I was not as disturbed by the letter as I was when I once answered my door to find a middle aged woman with a very young girl – between 7 and 10 years of age – who someone had got to memorize some Jehovah's Witnesses spiel in an attempt capitalize on her cuteness. I found that particularly repulsive because I really felt like she was being exploited.

Hey, haven't received a letter like that, but some a person who had come by the house to leave a JW pamphlet saw our "No Soliciting. please respect our privacy. please do not leave religious materials" sign on the window and decided that for some reason it was therefore different and acceptable to go home and put the item in an envelope and mail it to our address with a note (saying that they didn't leave it on the porch per our request)... as if that makes any sense whatsoever!!

being one of Jehovah's witnesses, i can comfirm that what you recieved is what we refer to as letter writing, it's another form of our preaching work. this is done in many cases, if the person who can't get out in the ministry is elderly/disabled/sick or perhaps they had tried reaching you at your home and never got a reponse. however to answer your question this is a common practice amongst us.

Yep, definitely from a Witness. My mother received one a couple of days after my dad died with a tract inside about the afterlife, etc. I think JWs who are sick or can't get out of the house do their witnessing this way. Instead of "cold calls" they do "cold letters" to strangers as a way of gettig in the hours of witnessing to people. I thought it was kind of weird that they sent it at that particular time, but then i thought that they probably just saw it in the newspaper. That's probably how a lot of them do their letter writing...by browsing through the obituaries. My mom can't even read and she's Jewish. the weird thing is, I was studying with the witnesses at the time(not anymore)!

Hulagaway - A Real Photographer doesn't preach his religeon, a real photographer is an observer of life who captures the beauty and filth of the world as seen through their eyes.
I'd love to know all about God's Wonderful purpose, maybe we can focus on how organisations... or in your case Cults, create these wonderful fantasy's of grandeur that force you to take to the streets to spread your insanity to others, even creating literature on it and buildings to meet in.
Better still though how you manage to share your craziness so well that you get the REAL goal of all religion, to make a few bucks.

God bless religion and all who blindly follow.

We should note that this is a religion that condones the rape of any women who is a virgin by soldiers (Judges 21:10-24 NLT)/(Numbers 31:7-18 NLT)/(Deuteronomy 20:10-14)

Then lets take into account this fantastic bit of scripture.
Laws of Rape (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT)
If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

What kind of lunatic would make a rape victim marry a rapist? Answer: God

Sex Slaves (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)
When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.

Ah nothing like selling a few people into sex slavery. Good Old Religion.

As a society we have to accept all religious views much the same as we accept that everyone is different.
But please, if your going to come preaching at my front door about the wonders of god, at least take the time to understand what a sick pile of wazoo your actually spreading; then promptly get out of my garden.

In reply to Payton Chung-mm telling them you don't speak english wouldnt' necessarily deter them.. we have bible based information in over 300 languages including many sign languages and over 236 countries there are Jehovah's Witnesses..just to let you know.

Jimmy Tofu-so what is your image of happiness? I mean whats wrong with a family smiling and happy?

Wzdry-a parrot? well i don't think its suppose to mean a family is doing welll...why is it weird? Maybe because this picture is from a few years ago..

Metroblossom- why a little creeped out? No obviously its not the purpose to creep you out. Is it creepy just because you dont know them? They probably got your address from the phone book
or like someone said because they couldn't reach you at home they wrote you a letter.

the rka-well i'm glad you found the official website..well we are not trying to convert people but show you what the bible says and let you decide for yourself what you want to do.
Also we talk to Jews too..we try to talk to everyone no matter their religion..
Also Jehovah's Witnesses are not related to Mormons except for the fact they both go out preaching but the way mormons do it is pretty different than the way we do it.

Brendaj-that letter was not from Jehovah's Witnesses we would not send a letter like that.

stella635- We are not trying to convert you, just trying to show people what the bible says about things like why and what happens when we die, and what hope we have for the future.
Also sorry that the witnesses you talked to were off guard, but we actually have a book called "Life, How did it get here? By Evolution or Creation?" It examines science and the bible research. Also another book that digs into science and the bible too called "Is there a creator that cares about you?"
But normally we like to talk with people and see what they think, find out what you believe.

I'll respond to the rest tomorrow..

Jimmy tofu- wow, those are beautiful pics under happiness! they all made me smile!
So if one of those pics was on the cover instead of the other pic would you have felt a bit better?

Who is your God?

swalve99- well we go preaching and teaching because that was what Jesus did while here on earth and his followers were commanded to do the same-Matthew 24:14; 28:19, 20.
Also we don't need to buy mailing lists. If we can't reach someone at their home we simply write a letter or go into the phone book. It's more of an individual thing..we don't all get together and do it. Maybe a few people would get together, but not a whole congregation.

A.Lewellen- Sorry if it looks like exploitation when a young child is trying to talk to you about the bible.. it's not meant for that.
When I was young I would do the same thing..it's because I wanted to. I loved my God Jehovah so much and I wanted to tell people about the beautiful paradise that God has promised for us to live on forever-Psalms 37:9-11, 29.
I know the cutest lil 5 or 6 year old boy i can't remember how old he is, who is the best reader that I've met for his age. His parents study the bible with him at home and when he comes to our meetings and we have bible disucussions with question and answer he raises his hand so high.
He answers or reads a scripture because he loves it. It's not something his parents force him to do, its from his own little heart..there are lots of other children like that.
Some maybe do memorize presentations.. but its because they want to.
Sorry if that looks like trying to capitalize on their cuteness..but that is not the intention.

beth a. barnett-Hey, well we are not soliciting. However.. seems that is a bit tricky. If it was me.. I probably would have just left it alone.. but each person has their own way of thinking I guess.. Have you talked with Jehovah's Witnesses before or read any of the magazines before? Or is it that you just don't want any religion leaving things?

redwinger33-well the tract was probably about what the bible says on death Ecclesiastes 9: 5, 10-trying to give your mom comfort in a difficult time. To know that she can see her husband again here on earth.-John 5:28, 29; Acts 24:15.
Also this letter writing should not be about "getting in the hours" for preaching..everything we do is out of love for neighbor and Jehovah God and his sons command for us.-Matthew 22:37, 38, Matthew 24:14
It's possible they used the obituaries but I have never done that before..
Sorry your father died.
Can I ask why did you decide to stop studying the bible with Jehovah's Witnesses?

DrHobo  Pro User  says:

@AmaylaMalaysia: Why bother when the bible says you can repent your sins at any time and be absolved in the eyes of "the lord".
Live life hard and fast, sleep around, enjoy the sin.
Then when your about to pop, repent it... that is if your scared of the wrath of something about as scary as the tooth fairy.
Posted 23 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

AmaylaMalaysia  Pro User  says:

Actually Jehovah's Witnesses try to live their lives according to God's standards in the bible every day in all of their actions in order to please God because we love him not because we are scared.

The fear we have is not one of "wrath" or anything but fear of displeasing our God, so out of respect and love we try our best to obey him.

This is from an article from a 2006 Watchtower about Repentance:
However, neither shame nor fear of exposure is repentance. “To repent” means “to change one’s mind” with regard to bad conduct, because of regret. A repentant person has “a heart broken and crushed” and wants to ‘right the wrong’ if possible.—Psalm 51:17; 2 Corinthians 7:11.

Also from a 2001 article: In the Bible, the verb “repent” is often translated from a Greek word that literally means “afterknowing,” as opposed to “foreknowing.” Thus, repentance involves a change in one’s mind, attitude, or purpose, a rejection of one’s former ways as unsatisfactory. (Acts 3:19; Revelation 2:5)

So to be truly "absolved in the eyes of the lord" does not mean we can go out and do whatever we want then come say.. oops sorry! then go and do it all over again the next day.

Like Saturday "sleeping around enjoying the sin", partying all night, then Sunday going to church asking forgiveness then the following week doing it all over again?
What would be the point of that, it'd be like driving around in circles.

Also i never got to reply to some earlier statements you made, but to reply to one of them now-unlike many religions, Jehovah's Witnesses do not have collection plates at our places of worship called Kingdom Halls nor do we solicit others for money.

Rather we follow Jesus's teaching of Matthew 10:7, 8- "You received free so give free."
Everything we do is based off of voluntary donations to the world wide preaching work and of making bible and bible-based publications, and of building places of worship all over the world.
No one profits from the donations made.
We do not get paid for being ministers or preachers and missionaries get paid a small amount to live off of through voluntary donations.

@AmaylaMalaysia: The making cash comment wasn't singling out JW, in fact all Christian based religions and many others are as bad as each other.
JW aren't quite as "Out There" as the Mormons who actually delude themselves into believing their leader discovered America back when people thought the world was flat.
Anyhoo, the Watchtower seems to be doing pretty well, because by god you lot "give freely" as you put it...
Watchtower Bible & Tract Society of New York
25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, 11201
Revenue: $951 million
Thank god for having to report those earnings eh.

More interesting (to me anyway) is how you quote Matthew 10:7.8 as a reference, even defence for the way the JW organisation gets its money.

"Matthew 10:7.8: Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."
I think you're cults taken that completely out of context; the whole of that section of doctrine ( Matthew 10:7 (King James Version)) is about healing the sick. (10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.) Not about "making donations" as you put it.
Note: Scientology has donations too... but at least in their delusion you get to hear about spaceships and some ridiculous alien.
*** Watchtower 1964 January 15 pp.63-4 Questions from Readers ***
"Flee from fornication." (1 Cor. 6:18) Thus if a Christian woman does not cry out and does not put forth every effort to flee, she would be viewed as consenting to the violation.
What about if she has a knife to her throat or is otherwise threatened with her life?
Actually this counsel is for her welfare; for, if she should submit to the man's passionate wishes, she would not only be consenting to fornication or adultery, but be plagued by the shame.
*** Watchtower 1968 June 1 pp.345-50 The Christian's View of Self-Defense ***
Would it be different if the man had a weapon and threatened to kill you if you did not submit? No, the Scriptures plainly state that Christians are under obligation to "flee from fornication." (1 Cor. 6:18) It is true that you face the possibility of death in this case. But you have no guarantee that if you meekly submit, your assailant will not kill you anyhow to avoid identification.
Bit more recent in case you think they may have "evolved" or rethought their stance..
*** Watchtower 2003 February 1 pp.30-31 Questions From Readers ***
However, since Jehovah is able to weigh all factors, including motives, he deals with understanding and justice in such cases, for "all his ways are justice." (Deuteronomy 32:4) He is aware of what actually took place and of the efforts the victim put forth to fight off her attacker. Therefore, a victim who was unable to scream but otherwise did all she could under the circumstances can leave matters in Jehovah's hands.—Psalm 55:22; 1 Peter 5:7.
That’s right kids, your “god” watched you getting raped, did nothing (because he gave man free will? Or because the tooth fairy has more evidence of existence); but he does appreciate that you made the effort to fight for your life.
Of course as this was answered and interpreted by a “man” you shouldn’t accept that answer as the JW bible is all about that “written by the hand of god” feeling so I’m sorry to say you’re gonna burn.
And just something that’s hilarious, if only the police used this eh' we would all be locked up at some point.
*** Awake! 1993 March 8 p.7 How to Prevent Rape ***
Profile of a Potential Rapist

Won't let you share expenses on a date and gets angry if you offer to pay.
Can't handle frustration without getting angry. (damn would that make them human)
Emotionally abuses you by insulting you, ignoring your views, or getting angry or annoyed when you make a suggestion. (or your a mothering pain in the arse)

*** Watchtower May 15 1970, p. 315 Avoiding the Snare of Homosexuality ***
(see also Watchtower October 1 1970, p. 604)

Helpful in this regard, then, is appreciating the fact that autoeroticism or masturbation is no mere innocent pastime but rather a practice that can lead to homosexual acts.
HAHAHAHA, We invented a thing called science, its better then religion, it comes with proof. Better still medical science.

But on the subject of science, at what point did they decide to rewrite science in the JW Religion? Did it seem like a laugh to see how far they could really push their followers?
“THE subject of gravitation is a very interesting one, especially as it relates to attraction between heavenly bodies. "Attraction of Gravitation Not Universal" (Golden Age, No. 314) seems to be well and truthfully thought out. Therefore, Newton's "universal law of gravitation", that "every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle with a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely as the squares of their distance apart", is not true. The variableness of the planets in their orbits proves that the "constant attractive force", necessitated by the universal gravitation theory, is based upon a false premise.” - The Golden Age 1932 August 17, pp.707-710
Anyhoo off the overly serious topics of rape and science; JW ban Oral Sex. Good god man how do you live? I mean do you have to leave your sex drive at the door when you join? Along with common sense, moral fibre and a sense of confidence that doesn’t rely on magic?

There was an interesting comment on the sex matter from an ex-jw;

“Sex is what consenting adults do in private. It has absolutely nothing to do with anyone else, be it elder or high priest.
I find it particularly abhorrent if my church counsellor has the gall to tell me what I can or cannot do in my bedroom, yet amazingly the JW’s had this privilege.
Can you imagine: ‘You! Markus, have been witnessed humping you wife up the ass by brother Peter who is completely indemnified of trespassing or any other crime whilst obtaining evidence against you; so you are hereby dis-fellowshipped.’”

Just in case my visible distain and negativity is causing you to lose the will to live, don’t forget suicide is bad, and you’d surely burn... crock o’ monkey poo.

AmaylaMalaysia - I don't believe in a deity. My god is my friends, family and inspirational people. They offer, and give, all I need to be happy. Add to that a pragmatic mind, a large dose of compassion and a strong sense of justice and I am complete.

It worries me that all your opinions seem to be based around a book written at a time when we also thought the world was flat and, quite simply, life wasn't so complicated. I'm aware that you can shoehorn passages of the Bible to fit modern day problems but as dear Dr. Hobo has pointed out, it can be massaged, manipulated and construed in many ways.

Reading the many negative comments (posted here) about a very positive gesture convinces me that we are definitely living in an ungodly world. Can you not see that Jehovah's Witnesses are simply reaching out to their neighbors to bring them comfort and good news from God's word. I do not understand why others see this as something "creepy". Violence and widespread immorality should give us the creeps. Very soon now, Jehovah will act to bring this ungodly world into destruction, just as the bible foretold, and usher in a new world of righteousness wherein man will enjoy living forever under perfect conditions, which is God's original purpose for the earth and for mankind.

We enjoy spiritually minded neighbors
who are willing to chat about current events
in light of the Scriptures which foretold them.
Letter writing will never take the place of a visit but
you'd be surprised
how many appreciate the contents of our little tracts.
Yes, indeed a number actually begin studying
the Bible as a result and happily continue doing so.
Especially in the case of some who
were praying for answers to their questions.
God does answer prayers in harmony
with His will and purpose.
Angels have directed our ministry and,
no Sir, even pitbulls don't stop the message.
We have offered to serve voluntarily with free will
and sound mind. And what a privelege it is.

The Jehovah's Witnesses are, in truth, "Evangelical Armageddonites".___In other words, they're "doomsayers".___Nothing else.___No single religious cult has contributed more to the mental health profession than the rigid "thou shalt not" movement of "The Witnesses".___In their "door-to-door" ministry, they're careful never to mention how restricted your life will become if you ever should decide to commit your life (and that of your family's, as well) to promoting the Jehovah's Witness corporate mythology.

By-the-way, I still consider them an integral part of the domestic spy apparatus in this country, as they are in the habit of keeping written records of every encounter they have with strangers...... and in their homes, no less.___Please keep that in mind the very next time they come knocking on your door.___Even if you don't answer the call, they'll dutifully make a note of that, too.
