The Earth Strikes Back

Manhole cover
There's more pavement on the beach than where the road used to be.
The Earth Strikes Back by metimbers2000.
It was a beautiful weekend, and the perfect storm for introducing our kids to environmentalism. First, we watched Al Gore’s movie, “An Inconvenient Truth” which is a real eye-opener. We learned that the ocean could rise 20 feet in the next 50 years if we don’t do something to reduce carbon emissions.

Today we headed to Ferry Beach in Saco to celebrate Earth Day with the Ferry Beach Ecological School. While we were there we walked down the beach and encountered the damage from the recent Patriot’s Day storm. Wow. This picture doesn’t even come close to telling the story, but I like this shot because you can clearly see how much land literally disappeared overnight. Check out the manhole cover sticking up about 6 feet out of the ground – it used to be level with the street.

Pay attention to what’s happening to our environment. Get educated about what you can do to help reverse the damage. I urge you to watch “An Inconvenient Truth” if you haven’t seen it yet.

That is a very interesting picture. People just seem to ignore the dangers of coastal living and keep right on moving as close to the water as possible!

I actually saw this happen at Cape Disappointment, Washington State park, when I was working in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. A large parking lot and restroom facility just went out to sea in a storm. The area is in the process of losing a good part of the park campgrounds because of the rising surf level.

There has been a new study by Portland State University professor Linda George, an atmospheric scientist, who with her students, has been making some startling discoveries about housing and freeways, or corridor pollution as the students call it.

And Hanford is leaking but the cleanup budget has been cut way back by Bush to finance the war in Iraq. When that radioactive poison (with a shelf life of one million years) hits the Columbia River, we can all plan on moving out of Oregon and Washington states.

As I understand it the neighborhood/beach used to extend almost a half a mile further out than it does now. Amazing the changes in 30 or 40 years! I had friends in that neighborhood that used to be a pretty good distance from the beach, but judging from this photo, they must be close to having beachfront property at this point if they are still there.

Hi there,

I am Shirley Kao writing from ROC.
May I use this photo to be published on Redcross (Chinese Version) to let more Chinese know the serious impact of global warming? Redcross is not a profitable org. It helps people who are suffered by earthquake, havey rains, etc.

I lover your pictures.
Through these pictures, I see a happy man.

Looking forward to getting your promission.

Thanks.
Shirley
