On Thursday morning of October 20th, a Mesa Fire unit was dispatched on an infant code (cardiac arrest). The patient was a 4 month old male found by his father in the morning not breathing and blue throughout his head, chest, and arms. Dad performed CPR (breathing and compressions) for a reported two minutes before child began breathing on his own. Allen Robinson’s knowledge of CPR certainly led to his son making it through this horrific ordeal. Allen stated he learned CPR while working as a candy striper years before.

On Tuesday, November 29th, a Mesa Fire unit responded to an adult code (cardiac arrest) call in which dispatch comments stated the patient was at a retirement community’s tennis court and there was a retired Mesa Fire Department paramedic there with an AED. That retired fire captain and paramedic was Dale Miller. Over the years, Dale has voluntarily taught classes to his neighbors on how to use AED’s and actually applied his knowledge that day and saved a man’s life. Dale defibrillated the gentleman before crews arrived on scene. By the time fire crews began treating and transporting the patient, he was awake, alert and talking to responding fire paramedics.
