yeah. it's a nut. Oddly enough, the official US name seems to be "horn nut" but I've also seen them called "caltrops" or caltrop nuts.

they used to have these at Berkeley Bowl, and I bought some once. They were kinda bland, flavorless really, and more trouble to peel then the eating was worth. I never figured out if there was an easier way to eat them...

You're supposed to boil them, so that the pulpy meat in the center will solidify.

Vice Magazine:
DEVIL’S CHESTNUT
Some anus brought these in from China back in the 1870s and they have completely taken over the northeastern seaboard. This here is one of the seed casings and if you step on it wrong it can go right through your shoe.

I found some of these at the local asian market and I grabbed them because they looked so cool. They were sold as caltrop. The woman at the counter asked if I knew what they were and laughed when I said no. She said you are to prepare them like peanuts. Boil them for half an hour then add salt. I made some last night, but I think I undercooked them, they were grainy like the ones in these pictures. It tasted kind of like potato.

The grocer also told me they only come out around the time of the Moon Festival. It looks like the kind of thing you'd eat at a Moon Festival.
