Jagrup Brar MLA applies for welfare...

Coast Salish Territory, Surrey BC - January 3,2012 is Day 3 of MLA Jagrup Brar's challenge to live on $610 a month, the welfare rate for an individual. Brar, New Democrat MLA for MLA Surrey-Fleetwood began the challenge homeless on New Year's Day.

After spending two days homeless waiting for the welfare office to open, Jagrup Brar "applied for welfare." He discovered the many obstacles to getting on welfare. Brar discovered after paying for housing, a damage deposit, bus tickets and a phone (both necessary to look for work) there isn’t much money left.

Brar has $108 for food and other necessities for the month. The Dietitians of Canada say that a man of Brar’s age needs to spend $234 a month on food to have a nutritious diet.

Raise the Rate's statement on Jagrup's Brar's month living on welfare rates: "Raise the Rates recognizes Jagrup Brar's commitment in living on only $610 for one month. We also realize that this will not be the same experience as a person who actually lives on welfare. He will start the challenge in good health and with adequate clothes; and his month on welfare rates will end after a month."
