iTunes phoning home?

Why are these songs not rated, Merlin? Stop slacking off.
iTunes phoning home? by merlinmann.
re: Boing Boing: iTunes update spies on your listening and sends it to Apple?

Appears to be sending info to 2o7.net.

NB: I’m not positive this is related to the iTunes update (and the creepy “mini-store”), but it is the first connection Li’l Snitch caught after the update.

Anybody get anything similar?

I believe it's almost entirely related to the mini-store. If you turn it off (button on the bottom right or menu item under Edit), it apparently stops phoning.

Thanks for posting this Merlin. I've also added an updated post to my blog. I'm surprised people aren't bothered by this.

Just another reason I'm never upgrading past 4.9, brushed metal might not be pretty, but at least it was still pretty focused on being a good music player and not becoming an all consuming Windows Media Player.

I'm happy that the first thing I did after downloading was to turn off the mini-store. A simple "would you like Apple to display suggestions in the mini-store according to the song you've clicked" would have been nice.

There was a post on BoingBoing this morning about it, someone confirmed that Jish' suggestion to turn off ministore stops sending your info.

I haven't installed the update, but I'm glad that guys like you, Kirk, and Marc are getting the word out about this.

I'm by no means a tin-foil hat wearer, but I may run out and buy a copy of Little Snitch after this...

This is how Steve Jobs controls the world's listening habits, by adjusting the 'party' mix and 'random' functions to his 'old hippy' music tastes. Everyone at Apple has known this for ages, but he beats them if they tell and sends them to the Newton dungeon. And you thought ipods were freeing us...

Edit > Hide MiniStore, baby.

Don't steal my precious iTunes real estate, Apple! We loves to see our whole big list in a window, we loves it to pieces.
