Web 1.0 Summit: My Garage, San Francisco

Attendance for my session was definitely thinner than I had hoped, but I think my presentation went over pretty well.

It's an exciting time to be having summits about the web, for sure.

I can't believe you didn't invite me. It's because you think women shouldn't be in technology, isn't it?

  3. Jish (98 months ago)

I SO wish I was there. I'm all about retro. Ahem.

  4. Erika Hall (98 months ago)

Could I order this in poster format please?

Bah ha ha ha ha ha ha ....

  5. anildash (98 months ago)

    give me a break!

  6. merlinmann (98 months ago)

Judith, no offense, but women don’t really “get” the whole concept of tables—let alone the proprietary banner tag.

You’re a sweet kid, and I love your gender, as a people, but I don’t know if I want you coding my “home page.”

Have you even heard of spacer gifs?

  7. gregveen (98 months ago)

What's this br tag you speak of? Can I hire you?

  8. ldandersen (98 months ago)

I hope you also plan to cover pervasive use of non-breaking space entities for precise page layout.

  9. fraserspeirs (98 months ago)

Who's doing the Trains on Rails session later on?

  10. Robert Brook (98 months ago)

    [ Tick Here ]

  11. Dan Dickinson (98 months ago)

Anyone else going to the blink tag session?

  12. jayallen (98 months ago)

Fast forward to 2005. How has the web advanced?

    <br />

    That, my friends, is progress.

  13. Mike Monteiro (98 months ago)

Is there still room in the "Photoshop: Page Curl Explorations" seminar?

  14. merlinmann (98 months ago)

We have places in the following sessions today:

    * Splash Pages: Make them click again
    * Click Here: Context is for suckers
    * Raise Them Right: The place of bevels in "The Enterprise"
    * 216 Ways to Stay Safe: Lynda Weinman explains the web-safe palette. Again.
    * Banner Day: 10 fast ways to become "Site of the Day" for a place you've never heard of

Also, we have a few slots left in the "Green Text on Black background" breakout session

Finally--regrettably--the "Blue Shirt & Gap Khakis" fashion show has been cancelled due to complete lack of interest.

  15. vanderwal (98 months ago)

Did I miss the "under construction image" session. I was soooo looking forward to that.

  16. bradlauster (98 months ago)

If anyone's interested, I'm hosting a "Replacing your <hr>'s with images" breakout session, during lunch.

Web 1.0 is like an old friend who's always there for you when you've been out of town for a long time. (props to that guy at the bar for coming up with this metaphor)

Web 1.0 combines the best of colors, words, pictures, and links to other things.

Web 1.0 can be used for the simplest implementations (suck.com) to incredibly complex ones (david siegel).

Web 1.0 can be used for pieces of websites or for an entire websites.

There are places where Web 1.0 is appropriate and flashy stuff is not and vice versa, but mostly the former.

Web 1.0 makes the web more fluid, more responsive, and less painful to use.

  18. courtneyp (98 months ago)

    I love you.

  19. Erika Hall (98 months ago)

Merlin is the Steve Martin of the Internets.

    Discuss.

  20. anildash (98 months ago)

i feel that nobody understood my joke above.

  21. merlinmann (98 months ago)

I got it, Anil. I thought it was very funny.

(You can thank me by socializing the term "BRajax" with all your famous friends.)

  22. bryanrmason (98 months ago)

Please let me know if there's an opening on the organizing committee next year. I'd love to help out.

I'm sure I can get Red Bull to sponsor.

  23. brentashley (98 months ago)

Pshaw! I've been making almost identical sage gesticulations for years before you came out with this lame <BR> stuff.

  24. soopa (98 months ago)

so what was decided about BLINK?

  25. odannyboy (98 months ago)

Can you show me how to do that scrolling text in the status bar? That rulz.

  26. mshobe (98 months ago)

I just wanted a brownbag on server-side image maps. Is that really too much to ask?

  27. rollerboogie (98 months ago)

Merlin, I love this picture so much. Oh my god, I love it like it's my child.

  28. mathowie (98 months ago)

    Via la <marquee>!

  29. Burningbird [deleted] (98 months ago)

Perfect! In this case, a picture really does say a thousand words.

    (Anil, I got it, too.)

Now, to business: let's examine your comments list for the ratio of men to women.

Hmmm, tsk, tsk, tsk. (That's a technical term for ...well I can't say, this is a family oriented photo.) As for the spacer.gif crack, I'll have you know that women have had to deal with blank spaces for years. It's just most of us call it 'dating'.

But you know, you can convert your Web 1.0 easily to Web 2.0 with the addition of a simple attribute:

<br rel="No, no! Don't go anywhere else! I'm going to continue, but on another line. Don't leave, Google. I love you!" />

  30. addadada (98 months ago)

    computer classes in a garage???...oh, wait..that's how H&P started...

    great action shot...

  31. Jay Fienberg (98 months ago)

OMG! I hope I'm not too late to start a business based on this. . .

  32. xmlblog (98 months ago)

I'll be at the Nested Tables BOF at the next summit. Anyone else in town that might want to have a geek dinner?

  33. richard winchell (98 months ago)

Is there a breakout session on server-push gif animations? Those things are really cool.

  34. styler* (97 months ago)

dude, is there any way i can get invited for next year?

  35. Matt Stevens (97 months ago)

For the folks who have asked about the Blink Committee's work, the provisional Blink.182 spec is here.

  36. soopa (97 months ago)

LOL. I thought the Blink.182-Spec was on pause?

  37. vasta (97 months ago)

Man! Next time, I'm sooo there! (I'll even take care of registration for you - for free, because I'm not much use with anything else.)

  38. doctor paradox (97 months ago)

omg that was a good laugh. the comments are as priceless as the photo.

  39. jeffreymcmanus (97 months ago)

Anil, I didn't get the joke but that doesn't mean you aren't funny.

  40. yahooza (95 months ago)

the industry needs more stalwart evangelists like you! you rock! let's go! yes!

  41. karlcow [deleted] (94 months ago)

  42. richard winchell (94 months ago)

Was there a special invitation-only Garage Camp this weekend, Merlin? Inquiring minds must know!

  43. electric counterpoint (93 months ago)

I've never seen so many "pro" tags after so many usernames all gathered in one place before.

    ...

Wait, so is it true that I can make images link to other things? That's so sweet.

  44. Sakurina (93 months ago)

    * Splash Pages: Make them click again

Dan Dickinson will understand the meaning of this comment. GET IT!??!

  45. Moses Noghbaudie (93 months ago)

<BR /> is better code actually...

  46. jayallen (93 months ago)

mOses, I think you're looking for this...

  47. merlinmann (93 months ago)

    Thanks, Jay.

    You always have my back.

  48. kpb (93 months ago)

There's really something in this...br...thing. If you can come up with a dashboard that sizzles, I know a couple of C-level guys who could monetize it. We'll have to put in a lot of hours, but it's not going to feel like work because:
    1. We're going to be paid twice the market rate.
    2. Our management structure is going to be based on a role playing game.
    3. We are going to have the best damn selection of organic juices in the office kitchen EVER.
Get in touch with my people, OK?

  49. Edward Vielmetti (93 months ago)

You Web 1.0 guys (and I mean guys) totally ruined the net. It was much better at Web 0.1 with line mode browsers that were economical with bandwidth.

And I will never forgive you for killing Gopher. Ever.

  50. merlinmann (93 months ago)

Guys, guys: we’re all over Gopher.

Gopher was my first net app in 94 or so. Good times.

  51. chrisheuer (93 months ago)

I want to hire you to teach us about this BR thing - my big multinational corporation was thinking about sponsoring this Web2.1 evevnt but I think they are way too stuck in the future - I mean really, most people still dont understand Web 1.0 yet... (disclaimer: I will be at 1.0 and am organizing 2.1)
