St Johns Pulpit

St Johns Pulpit by Meremail.
I have wanted to photograph St Johns for some time, ever since I walked inside and saw the amazing leadlight windows at the front with the afternoon sun shining through.

So I visited today (appropriately a Sunday), to see if I could capture the magic of our very own Gothic cathedral and translate it to images.
Unfortunately, the contrast was to high, and even using HDR, I couldn't get an image I was happy with, so I will have to figure out a way of doing shots at different times of the day to blend. But while there I did take the opportunity to take lots of shots as it has a gothic ambiance that is wonderful, although challenging because it is so dark and moody inside.

This is the pulpit (correct me if I am wrong) using the wide angle lens set to 13mm. This is 3 bracketed images at different exposures and processed in Photomatix.

Very imposing place St Johns. I have played in it a few times. The HDR really gives it that Gothic look, lots of detail and colour. Well done. I'm sure you'll find a way to get the shots you want.

@eliselovesprada, St John's is the Anglican Cathederal. I think all the WYD folks were down the road at St Stephen's on Saturday. There were 6000 at the parade and 10000 at the gathering afterwards. I don't know that the Anglicans are involved in WYD?

For the benefit of others, WYD is World Youth Day which is a convention in Sydney, for which the pope is visiting Australia. I think the Anglicans are probably still likely to be interested.
This was taken mid-afternoon Sunday and the service was over. There were 3 other serious looking photographers there, who look like they had spent a lot more money on equipment than I had. ;-)

Great use of the wide-angle lens and a very good composition and perspective. A very impressive building. The HDR processing looks very natural, just boosting the details and the colours without ghosting. Grand job.

Cool, didn't know those guys were involved. Hope they have good time in Sydney. We've been entertaining a couple of Germans who leave tomorrow. Altogether on the coast there were 30 Canadians and 80 Germans plus the local kids. They are all travelling by bus. Yukkk. But they are young they won't mind.

Even if it's not the shot you wanted, it's still a really neat photo!

Impressive. I like the way the red carpet leads the eye to the altar, to the windows, to the roof.

And intimidating. A great sense of space and the feeling of how small one is in the grand design...

Thanks everyone. I really liked this shot. The Deans office at the cathedral has asked me for a copy of the shot, and I am happy to oblige.
