1981 - this is my family

We traveled from Chicago to California and back in a small RV to visit my mom's parents for the first time as a brand new blended family.

We chewed gumballs through Death Valley, watched heat lightening in Flagstaff, and I lost my first tooth during a walk in a Nebraska field (see: gumball).

We also melted a pack of crayons on the hot, black dashboard. We were jerks.

It is, I'm sure, when our family character first began to take shape - during those hot, close-quarter highway hours, the afternoon spent swimming in icy ocean water for the first time at Morro Bay, the brief and intolerable stopovers at scenic overlooks.

Our dear and beleaguered parents survived to document this, the full face of our new personality.

Amy's wedding to John

The bridesmaid dress didn't seem so bad at the time. Maybe they never do. No, wait, they do. They do usually seem pretty bad. This is kind of like a Christmas tablecloth.
