grand canyon august 2009

Last month, Matt and I went up to Flagstaff to have lunch with family. While up north we decided to drive to the south rim of the Grand Canyon for sunset. There was a large controlled fire on the north rim, and the wind was blowing the smoke into the canyon. It made for a very hazy afternoon, but we managed to get a few decent shots.

President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha landed in Arizona on today. Their visit will include the Grand Canyon and Phoenix, said Adam Abrams, western regional press spokesman for the White House. Details of the president's public appearances are not yet available but will be released closer to the trip.

The Arizona visit will be the final part of a three-day Western trip, Abrams said. The first family also will travel to the Bozeman area of Montana on Aug. 14 and to Yellowstone, Wyo., and Grand Junction, Col., on Aug. 15.

Although Obama lost Arizona to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the 2008 presidential election, it is seen as a swing state that is up for grabs in 2012.

Obama's visit to Arizona will coincide with the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Phoenix Convention Center from Aug. 15 to 23.

practically perfect poppy picture

Another highlight of my trip to the cabin was the poppies. They were just starting to bloom when I arrived the last week of June. within a few days, they were absolutely spectacular! There were fields of them everywhere!! This field was just a short walk from our cabin.

If it wasn't for all the power lines, this would be a perfect photo. But then again, without the poswer lines, we'd have no power at teh cabin. and that would suck.
