دریاچه ارومیه

دریاچه ارومیه در شمال غربی ایران قرار دارد و در میان دو استان آذربایجان شرقی و آذربایجان غربی بخش شده است. دریاچه ارومیه بزرگ‌ترین دریاچه درونْ سرزمینی ایران و دومین دریاچه آب شور دنیا است . آب این دریاچه بسیار شور بوده و عمدتآ از رودخانه‌های زرینه‌رود، سیمینه‌رود، گدار، باراندوز، شهرچای، نازلو و زولا تغذیه می‌شود.

حوضه آبریز دریاچه ارومیه ۵۱۸۷۶ کیلومتر مربع است که پیرامون ۳٪ مساحت کل کشور ایران را دربر می‌گیرد.این حوضه با داشتن دشت‌هایی مانند دشت پیرانشهر سلماس، ارومیه، تبریز، آذرشهر، مراغه، میاندوآب، مهاباد، نقده و اشنویه یکی از کانون‌های ارزشمند فعالیت کشاورزی و دامداری در ایران بشمار می‌رود.

دریاچه ارومیه بزرگ‌ترین آبگیر دائمی آسیای غربی است که در غرب پشته (فلات) ایران قرار گرفته. پارک ملی دریاچه ارومیه پس از مرداب انزلی از جالب‌ترین و نغزترین زیستگاه‌های طبیعی جانوران در ایران بشمار می‌رود. این دریاچه در حال حاضر ۲۷ گونه پستاندار ،۲۱۲ گونه پرنده ،۴۱ گونه خزنده ،۷ گونه دوزیست و ۲۶ گونه ماهی حیات وحش این دریچه را تشکیل داده است.

دریاچه ارومیه دارای ۱۰۲ جزیره است که همه آنها از سوی سازمان یونسکو به عنوان اندوخته طبیعی جهان به ثبت رسیده است. جزیره اِشک زیستگاه پرندگان زیبای کوچگر از جمله مرغ آتش و تنجه و نیز گوزن زرد ایرانی است. گِل کرانه دریاچه خاصیت درمان برای دردهای بندگاهی (مَفصلی) و بیماری‌های زنان را دارد. برای گشت و گذار در دریاچه و جزیره‌های آن می‌توان از دو کشتی سهند و نوح یا قایق‌های گوناگون در بندر گلمانخانه بهره گرفت.


تاریخ

نام کهن این دریاچه چیچَست بوده است. این واژه واژه ایست از اوستایی و پارسی باستان و تلفظ آن چَئِچَستَ بوده است. دریاچه چیچست در اسطوره‌های ایرانی نقشی بنیادین دارد. عرصه بسیاری از رویدادهای مهم زندگی کیخسرو، کرانه این دریاچه بوده است. دژ بهمن که کیخسرو در نبردی غول آسا و سهمگین آن را میگشاید و از چنگ دیوان بدر می‌‌آورد در نزدیکی همین دریاچه بوده و بسیاری اسطوره‌های دیگر. نام ارومیه نامیست که آشوریان به آن داده اند. اور در زبان آشوری به معنای شهر است (همان واژه‌ای که در نام اورشلیم (شهر آشتی) هم وجود دارد) و میه به معنای آب است (همریشه با مآء عربی). پس اورمیه یا ارومیه بمعنی شهر آب است.

در دوران پهلوی به مناسبت پادشاهی رضاشاه پهلوی، به این دریاچه نام رضائیه داده شد.

Lake Urmia

Lake Urmia (Azerbaijani: ارومیه گولو , ارومیه گولی, Persian: دریاچه ارومیه ), Daryacheh-ye Orumieh, ancient name: Lake Matiene) is a salt lake in northwestern Iran near Turkey. The lake is between the provinces of East Azarbaijan and West Azarbaijan, west of the southern portion of the similarly shaped Caspian Sea. It is the largest lake inside Iran, and the second salt water lake on earth, with a surface area of approximately 5,200 km² (2,000 mile²). At its maximum extent, it is about 140 km (87 miles) long, and 55 km (34 miles) wide. Its deepest point is approximately 16 m (52 ft) deep.

History

The lake is named after the provincial capital city of Urmia, originally a Syriac name meaning city of water. It was called Lake Rezaiyeh (Persian: دریاچه رضائیه) in the early 1930s after Reza Shah Pahlavi, but the lake was renamed 'Urmia' in the late 1970s. Its ancient Persian name was Chichast (meaning, "glittering"--a reference to its glittering mineral particles suspended in the lake water and its shores). In the medieval times it came to be known as Lake Kabuda, or "azure," in Persian, (Gabod in Armenian).

Lake Matianus (Latin: Lacus Matianus) is an old name for Lake Urmia. It was known as the Lower Nairi Sea (Lake Van was the Upper Nairi Sea) during the Nairi-Urartu period and as the Lower Armenian Sea after the Armenians displaced the Nairi. It was the center of the Mannaean Kingdom, a potential Mannaean settlement represented by the ruin mound of Hasanlu was on the south side of Lake Matianus. Mannae was overrun by a people who were called Matiani or Matieni, an Iranic people variously identified as Scythian, Saka, Sarmatian, or Cimmerian. It is not clear whether the lake took its name from the people or the people from the lake, but the country came to be called Matiene or Matiane.

The lake is marked by more than a hundred small rocky islands, which are stopover points in the migrations of various kinds of wild bird life (including flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills, ibises, storks, shelducks, avocets, stilts, and gulls). The second largest island, Kaboudi, is the burial place of Hulagu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan and the sacker of Baghdad, where he had his treasury.

By virtue of its high levels of salinity, the lake does not sustain any fish species. Nonetheless, Lake Urmia is considered to be one of the largest natural habitats of Artemia, which serve as food source for the migratory birds such flamingos. Most of the area of the lake is considered a national park.

The lake is a major barrier between two of the most important cities in West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan provinces, Urmia and Tabriz. A project to build a bridge across the lake was initiated in the 1970s but was abandoned after the Iranian Revolution of 1979. The project was revived in the early 2000s, and is due to finish by the end of 2007.

Lake Urmia has been shrinking for a long time, with an annual evaporation rate of 0.6m to 1m (24 to 39 inches). The lake's salts are considered to have medical effects, especially as a cure for rheumatism. Lake Urmia is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
