I read an interesting story about how the fire started. A welder was doing some work around the dome, and he had a fire extinguisher along as a precaution. Every second or third weld he made, there would be a small fire in the plexiglass, and he'd put it out with the fire extinguisher before it got big. He was coming to the end of his shift, he only had a few more welds to do, and the fire extinguisher ran out. So he took a chance on just one more weld, and that was the fire he suddenly couldn't put out.
This story was in CoEvolution Quarterly, the edition with this photo on the cover.

My father saw it burn from his office window.

This is the fire that destroyed the USA Pavilion from Expo 67 …. The frame work still stands and used as an outdoor exhibition area. It was a unique structure … Geodesic-Dome is what I think it was called.
