100_2252 what they were thinking?

Auschwitz KL I: Commandant Rudolf Hoess was hanged on this spot (a short walk from his wartime house) in 1947. For background and other photos, see

(This was the last public execution in Poland, according to that article.)

For a while I was going to let this image speak for itself. But the obvious inappropriateness of this tourist moment is staggering. I will charitably presume that they didn't know about Hoess' execution per se. But if they didn't know what happened nearby, why were they there in the first place?
