Dragon Scout by Brian McCarty

Dragon Scout

The last shoot of one of artist Amanda Visell's characters had me in danger of being jumped by crazed hobos. This one had the very real threat of attack by hungry grizzly bears, sighted in the area prior to sunset. It's as if the shoot existed in Amanda's darkly humored world, filled with pink elephants and baby-eating crocodiles. The fact that the location was an old summer camp near the trailhead to Death Canyon just further pushed the surreal threshold.

I'm pleased to announce that a behind the scenes look at the Dragon Scout shoot will premiere in August as part of the Photoflex Pro Showcase. The feature will reveal some of the equipment and techniques behind my work. More articles will follow in later months.

Gooberry by Brian McCarty

Gooberry

After several years of sowing, watering, and reaping, Attaboy's pull-string talking Gooberry will finally be picked for human consumption by the bicycle-riding indy label Silver Sprocket. Under-ripe and malformed, each hug and pull of it's pull-string brings the Gooberry closer to a most painful death.

Walrus Rider by Brian McCarty

Walrus Rider

Born with legs of a golden tint,
He'd walk, he'd run, he'd jump and sprint.
There's nothing much he COULDN'T do,
With legs of gold and wooden shoes.
The girls all loved his limbs and knees,
For no one else had legs like these,
But jealousy arose with some,
Cause' HE was having all the fun!
So late one night upon his slumber,
Darkness drenched with rain and thunder.
There he slept and dreamt of blondes,
But when he woke HIS LEGS WERE GONE!
Who would do this tragic thing?
What good is a bee if a bee cannot sting?
And what good is HE without legs at all?
Now he cannot move and he's not that tall!
So he hopped on the back of his bestest friend,
And together they ride as he seeks his REVENGE!

Mark Ryden's YHWH by Brian McCarty

Mark Ryden's YHWH

Toys factor heavily in the work of brilliant pop surrealist painter Mark Ryden, yet Mark chose not to release any toys of his own until now. After a number of false starts dating as far back as 2005, YHWH is being brought into vinyl form by Long Gone John and his Necessaries Toy Foundation. I was flattered to be commission by John to shoot the character for its upcoming premiere.

YHWH is inspired by a god-like figure from Ryden's Bunnies and Bees series. When brainstorming the shot with Mark, it seemed a natural choice to play with elements from the original painting - similar location, girl, lighting, and basic composition. The weather in Los Angeles had been less than cooperative with heavy rains and wind, but I was fortunate enough to have a day with beautiful, broken clouds.

6-year-old Thea Jones was cast as my YHWH girl. Aside from simply being adorable and accurate to Ryden's style, Thea was perfect. She understood the character implicitly and needed little direction.
