Dreaming

Dreaming

May 2010

Nothing special -- just testing out a 55mm f1.2 lens. The background rendition for this particular scene is quite nice, in a strange sort of way, and the lens is actually pretty sharp -- acceptably so at f1.2, and very sharp at f2.8, as would be expected.

Also, I've been working on redesigning my website, so if you happen to stop by, feel free to let me know what you think there or here. Photographs from China are still on the to-do list.

Union City BART Station — San Francisco Bay Area, California — May 2010

[better]

Side note: I'm in the process of deleting extra-bad photographs from my Flickr page, and trying to repopulate it with some better photographs more in my 'style' (whatever that may mean). Using a Flickr pro account to document my photographic growth was neat, but now I'm hosting all the years of mediocrity elsewhere (hidden from the public view), and trying to make my stream more pleasant to view.

The Great Wall

The Great Wall

Northeast of Beijing, China — April 2010

The first of many photographs from my recent trip to China. This is a section of the Great Wall known as the Jinshanling-Simatai Wall. The Simatai portion has been restored quite a bit, but the Jinshanling portion is still much in its natural condition, with broken pathways, stone litter, and narrow steps. While the mid-day light isn't ideal for photography, we were blessed with a stunningly clear day -- far from normal for this area. If you look closely, you can follow the Wall winding its way along the hilltops off into the distance.

A black and white version, along with more photographs from my trip to China, can be found on my SmugMug gallery.

Salt Point State Park

Salt Point State Park

Salt Point State Park, California — March 2010

I was able to take a camping trip to Salt Point State Park on the California coast last weekend. The area is beautiful, with high cliffs overlooking the ocean. Photography wasn't my main focus while I was there, but I did manage to come away with one photograph I like.

Salt Point State Park is home to some very strange and interesting rock formations. The foreground rock with its network of holes is typical for this area, and many such rock formations can be found. Apparently it's just the way the rock naturally wears due to the elements.

Mendocino, California — February 15, 2010

Thanks to the three-day weekend and the generous gift of a home to stay in, I was able to spend the weekend in Mendocino, on the north coast of California. Mendocino is a sleepy tourist town, but the location is beautiful. I wasn't able to take too many photographs, but this is one I am fond of. This is a walking path on a cliff over the sea near the Point Cabrillo light station, an old 1900s era light house. This is actually the view inland rather than toward the sea, as the coastal fog over the water was too thick to create a good photograph.

This is also one of my first photographs with my new Tokina 12-24mm wide angle lens. I'm still trying to get a feel for how to use the lens well. :)

You can also see a color version on my main website (link below) if you're interested.

[Oops -- I just noticed I have the wrong copyright date on the photograph. Oh well.]
