big wheel keeps on turning

big wheel keeps on turning

They've got a big wheel in George Square.
It looks a bit surreal lit up against the cold dark Glasgow winter nights & further to that I had 6 frames left on my roll of Portra.

Martin John Henry

Martin John Henry

The former De Rosa man supporting Sparrow & the Workshop the other night.
I was going to write "of the much missed De Rosa" but he's got new stuff out, a new band and they are excellent.
So it's business as usual.

I used Kodak Portra 400 for this.
It's pushed about a stop in development so that'd make it iso 3200 ish? (2 stops underexposed + 1 pushed)
Anyway, had I shot this on digital I think I'd have lost the detail on his arms and on his face and in the LED stage light at the back.

This film really does need the light, it doesn't handle the shots where people are in shadow too well.
Lots of graininess and loss of sharpness.
But you don't use film to shoot in a the dark.
You use it for the latitude, the colours and the skin tones.

welcome to my lovely town.

Denny Town Centre Demolition

Goodbye Sylvester's, goodbye to the Omar Khayyam and goodbye to the Lion & Dragon.

They've finally got around to demolishing our town centre.
It seems like a lifetime ago that I photographed the walk around the block protest march. (below)
My iptc data tells me this was the 1st of May 2010 but it feels longer than that.

Spent the afternoon taking some photos and then interviewing folk for a documentary.

Meursault via Holga

Meursault via Holga

I do love Meursault.
I wasn't originally that impressed by them but they've become better and stronger every time I've seen them.
Last time I had to bail out half way through their set, no late last festival trains on a Sunday so this time I wanted to see them without looking through the viewfinder of my camera.
So I brought the Holga!

I've never used a Holga at a gig before, it's as utterly rubbish as you'd expect but it can still make interesting images.
This is Rollei RPX 400 pushed 3 stops.
I used the flash on some frames, used bulb on a couple of others and on this one I took several frames to build up the exposure.
I've removed some dust and boosted the contrast a bit after scanning.

I got some odd and not altogether unpleasant results but alas nae Scarlett Johansson in Sleazy's tonight.
