Peas and beans

Peas and beans by Matt Biddulph.
spoils of Broadway Market, salted and buttered.

I'd never shelled fresh peas by hand before.

We used to grow peas in the garden when I was a kid. When my friends came around in the summer we'd go out and munch away on them raw. If you peel the shells in the right way then you can eat them too. Yum.

Green sweeties from my childhood, my parents gave up growing them I think, as I used to eat them all and pull up the potatoes to "check" on them

Shelling peas was entertainment at my grandparents house in the summer. I used to love picking them fresh out of the garden then shelling. There is nothing better.

We tried growing them this year but the slugs seemed to love them, so we've had to make do with in season British peas in pods from Sains - the working person's Waitrose.

The slugs also ate our tomato seedlings, which seemed to be made of hardier stuff, and grew back strongly, only to be flowering *now*, in late Aug.

I think we may have a surfeit of green tomato chutney, made with pea sized tomatoes.
