Transfiguration

Transfiguration by Jon ..
I admit. I've never done HDR before primarily because I hate how it looks. You've probably seen those kinds of photos before... over-processed, over saturated, hyper-real images. (just my own personal taste, don't kill me! :).

But, just because I've seen bad examples of HDR doesn't mean it can't be done nicely. In fact I've seen some really stunning HDR photos which are subtle and beautiful, but unfortunately they're somewhat rare.

The above is my first attempt at HDR. It's a composition of 5 different shots of the same scene with each shot exposed slightly differently.

Somewhere in the horizon is the CN Tower, but it's obscured by the fog.

Very well done HDR. I like the fact that it doesn't stand out as HDR at first glance. Though I do think there is a place for hypercolor HDR, it is definetly overdone on flickr.

Love that wrap-around fog. You've captured the feeling of our weather really well, yet the subject is rather exotic. Very well done first HDR attempt.

:D I like your fog because it looks like something creepy.... though this Cathedral can be creepy too! :)

Thanks! The credit for the mist goes to someone else. :)

Wow. Thanks Lauren! Indeed, HDR can be very nice. I've seen some really great examples where the use of HDR is very subtle, but very useful in bringing out little details in the shadows and lighted areas.

Thanks Darlene!

Agreed! Thanks for the comment.

Actually it's my second attempt at HDR... my first HDR attempt I probably won't be uploading. :D

It does look like a monk's monestary on top of a mountain, doesn't it?

Actually surprisingly simple to do HDR (perhaps which is why it's so common on Flickr). Basically a 2 step process and assuming you have Photoshop. I'm sure other software will do it for you.

Thanks!

Haha! Yes. HDR Snobbery. Of course I used to be a purist snob too ... I used to feel that *any* form processing is like cheating. How things have changed! :D

Thanks for the visit! Of course I don't mind. Thanks for the generous comment! :)

Oh Joan, you're breaking my heart! LOL

Yeah, that spot was hard to process. Funny that HDR is actually very good at "healing" blown-out portions of images, but I just couldn't figure out the right combination of adjustments to make it work.

Haha. Thanks. I'm trying really hard to embrace it... it's just not as exciting as Toronto. (Though I did sleep on the GO train this morning... that was exciting! :D).

And I agree with you about HDR- it's a tool to use occasionally, and you picked the right time to use it!

I agree with your thoughts on HDR when it's cranked to the max, but here it's a great tool to reveal a scene closer to what the eye can see.

Really interesting shot and the mix of like is great.
