Beach Cottage Loft

Pre-construction. Blue tape on floor to the right and on the 1/2 wall to the left is about where the new wall/beam/post/whatever things will be. The sunlight up there is amazing (although this shot doesn't show that) so I don't want to break up the light-flow with solid walls, but I would, however, like to have a room with walls...hmmm, what to do? They may start construction on the beam part of the project before I'm sure I know what to do with the rest.

    I assume the left 1/2 wall leads to the stairs? This is exactly my taste.

    Yep, that's my house Peter and yes, the wall on the left leads to the downstairs. Thanks for commenting on the ceiling...all the ceilings in the house are wood plank and really tall (around 14 feet) but they were all dark wood so I have spent the past year up on a ladder painting my stupid ceilings. Your comment just made all that hard work worth it :) Thank you!

    Thanks glowingon...the room is a work in progress and pretty bare right now. Hopefully soon it will be a nicer space.

    It's so pretty up there. I like the wall idea. You have done such a nice job remodeling & decorating throughout your house. I told you I thought those ceilings looked really great white...I'm glad Peter commented too. I know your dad about had a heart attack when you wanted to paint all the wood, but I like it a lot.

    Awww, thanks Julie (blushing) :) Ya, I think it's a guy thing...my dad and every other man I asked hated the idea of painting the wood ceilings.

    As for the "wall"...the contractor was just here...yipppee!! I'm going to have a beam put across the open side of the room, then they're going to install big, white plantation shutters so I can leave them open and still have the open "loft" feel, but I can close it off when I want to. The beam and columns will be the fast part, the shutters are going to have to be custom built so they'll take a few weeks.

    I almost said "it must be a guy thing". It's funny you said that. Mike is the same way about painting woodwork. Maybe that is why they say a guy can make a house, but a woman makes the home. True from my observation although a bit sexist too. I know that is not true of all guys or girls. Obviously Peter has great taste & my l/2 brother has a real eye for design & decorating and my daughter, Misty, can use just about any power tool, but in general that does seem to be true.

    I hope it will be okay. I'm positive I want some kind of space divider up there, but not positive about my decisions of how to do it. The contractor that was here today is a good one, so hopefully he'll keep me from doing anything really stupid.

    Nice of you to say but this house has been FULL of disasters and do-overs on my behalf. Remember our drape discussion? Ya, stuff like that...lots and lots of bad decisions.

    I guess I'm one of the girls-- I like the painted ceiling. (I painted all of the wood work in our house white, much to the dismay of all the men in my life, but now they see it my way.)

    Thanks John...I love the light up there. I took this shot on a fairly cloudy day, on a sunny day the light pours in through the trees and makes really cool shadows everywhere.

    Mary - We're in good company then with our painted wood! This is just an unused room (guest room) in my house that I would like to make more usuable...it's a little too open right now.
