Sunset Through Scripps Pier

Sunset Through Scripps Pier by Matt Soave.
This is the sun setting right in the middle of the Scripps Pier in La Jolla on May 2nd, 2008.

See a detailed explanation of how I did it here: digital-photography-school.com/blog/perfect-sunset-compos...

Great shot(s).

One word - HDR - High Dynamic Range. OK, so it's an acronym. HDR is where you take several shots in succession to get exposeres across a larger range, and blend them in an HDR program (Photoshop works, there are also many specialty HDR programs).

Higher end SLR's will let you take 7+ pictures in under a second with each one having a set (say 1/3 stop) difference in exposure. It helps to use a tripod.

Also, check out Strobist for tips and lessons on using fill flash to light up the shadows under the pier.

One other tip, in Photoshop / Aperture / etc check out the shadows and highlights command, you can lighten the shadows (dark areas) selectively.

All in all, and outstanding article and series of shots.

Congrats!

Thanks for the comments and the favorites, everyone!

Ranger Pete:
The pier shadows are already brightened considerably from the original RAW file. I get too much noise when I adjust it any more. An HDR would've been nice for sure, but I don't have a portrait-mounting tripod (nor incredibly steady hands at 300mm). I've tried making an HDR from this single RAW file, but I get too much noise at ISO 800. I should invest in a good flash though.

PS, if you want to see an HDR pier I have posted one from Lake Tahoe in my stream. If handheld you might try PS CS3's merge to HDR function as it often gets the images aligned right with no effort. If that fails Photo-Dynamic HDR has a pin setting utility to let you manually do it. That takes time, but it has worked for me when nothing else would and as a bonus it's reasonably priced. Of course a tripod is preferred when possible.

Here's a direct link to my hdr effort, if you want me to remove the photo link just let me know and thanks again for the great info on sunset/sunrise timing. I have used Stellarium for determining when stars will be where and what not, I'm sure you would love this free program, check it out!
