Schornborn Palace

Schornborn Palace

Schornborn Castle, Ukraine, also known as the Schornborn Hunting Castle

During the early 18th century, the beginning of the revolt led by Ferenc II Rákóczi took place around the Mukachevo area. During the mid-late 18th century, the city came under Austrian control as part of the Kingdom of Hungary and was made a key fortress of the Habsburg Monarchy. In 1726, the Palanok Castle and the town, before 1711 owned by the Rákóczi family, was given by the Habsburgs to the Schönborn family, who were responsible for an expansion of the town.

Soviet Era Hydrofoil (Revisited)

Soviet Era Hydrofoil (Revisited)

• HDR Photo ~ This is a re-visit to one of my earlier HDR attempts and redoing it with some new skills I’ve picked up along the way.

Here is the original Soviet Era Hydrofoil

Seen in Chernigov, Ukraine.

When my wife first saw this parked in Chernigov, she recognized what it was right away. I experienced a what the ???? moment. This is a Polesye class hydrofoil, made to operate in shallower waters.

Shadows of an Afghan War 2012

Shadows of an Afghan War 2012

Kiev Ukraine.

Flowers usually bring thoughts of spring, warm weather, love, carefree days. But flowers also show up on darker occasions, and this is one of those.

After making it out to take photos about 10 times in January, February 15 was the first time taking photos in 3.5 weeks. A period of more snow than normal, followed by brutal cold left me indoors contemplating the brighter thoughts and warmer times normally associated with flowers.

But I adventured out February 15, even though temperatures this morning hovered around -12C or +11F. I really shouldn't have been too concerned about the cold, since the same event, the same day last year the temperatures were -14C or +7F. In other words, I've been through it before.

A similar photo from last year... www.flickr.com/photos/mattsh/5457561729/

The Heart of Kiev

The Heart of Kiev

Appropriate enough since tomorrow is Valentine's Day.

But dug back to last year to find this shot. Right now, this area is covered with snow!

Cabinet of Ministers

Cabinet of Ministers

HDR/9 image Panorama

Yeah, this building is quite big. And I needed nine images to capture it, even from this distance. Of course if I had remembered to pack my wide angle, I could have done it in less. :-P
