Downtown Los Angeles at night from the Griffith Observatory by Matt McGrath Photography

Downtown Los Angeles at night from the Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is in Los Angeles, California. Sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in L.A.'s Griffith Park, it commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. The observatory is a popular tourist attraction with an extensive array of space- and science-related displays and was built in 1933 and renovated from 2002-2006.

Downtown Los Angeles and the 110 Freeway from Elysian Park by Matt McGrath Photography

Downtown Los Angeles and the 110 Freeway from Elysian Park

I've always liked this photo when I've seen it from other photographers so I finally decided to head up there and check it out for myself.

It was the first time I'd ever wandered around Elysian Park. It was pretty cool, just a bit sketchy after dark. From the all-knowing Wikipedia:

Elysian Park is a park and adjacent neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles, California.

Encompassing Chavez Ravine where Dodger Stadium is located, Elysian Park is mostly a hillside community that is also home to the Los Angeles Police Academy.

The park itself is the second largest park in Los Angeles at 600 acres (2.4 km²). It is also the city's oldest park, founded in 1886 by the Elysian Park Enabling Ordinance. In 1964 the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park was founded to prevent the City of Los Angeles from constructing the Municipal Convention Center on 62 acres (250,000 m2) of park land. Parkside residents enjoy the large and fruitful avocado trees that grow in the park.

Elysian Park is bordered by Echo Park on the west, Chinatown on the south and the 5-Freeway, Cypress Park and Elysian Valley on the north.

The Figueroa Street Tunnels take northbound State Route 110 (the Pasadena Freeway) through the park. The southbound lanes are higher, in a cut.

Cross country skiing down Ouray Avenue - Grand Junction, Colorado by Matt McGrath Photography

Cross country skiing down Ouray Avenue - Grand Junction, Colorado

We got 10-12" of snow in Grand Junction last night and today, so much that my office closed down for the day.

I decided to celebrate my snow day by skiing around the neighborhood. We saw at least 8 other people doing the same thing.

I love Colorado!
