arto says:

No, GTA: Liberty City Stories had a gothic cathedral in Staunton Island (the downtown area)--I don't recall offhand what was in the same spot in GTAIII.

Potrod says:

FYI.. this is the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world (St. John the Divine) on 112th & Amsterdam. I might have to get this game....

Its actually the Church of St John the Baptist in midtown...Not St John the Divine.

Sorry, mpalumbo4--Potrod is absolutely correct. This is St John the Divine (I live a block away). You can see the coloring at the top of the sculptural program in the entryway, as well as the scaffolding around the south tower (now removed--the scaffolding, that is).

Whoever took the NYC photos in this set has a genius for matching up the angles.

(That is, the NYC photo is of St. John the Divine. The GTA image is just different enough in crucial places that it could conceivably be another church.)

@It's Herk! and arto, there was definitely a cathedral/church in GTA3. Fairly sure it was in the south end of the second island, but I've not played it for years so don't quote me on that.

Schmuela - I'm sorry but you are wrong.

There are 2 CHURCHES in the "manhattan" section of GTA:IV and neither of them is St John the Divine.

One is modeled after the Church of St John the Baptist, I thought that was the one shown here, but it is not.

The other one, that is shown in the above picture is St Patrick's Cathedral. Take a look here and you'll see the STARTLING similarities.

mpalumbo4 you are absolutely correct (actually I have no idea, but that St. Patricks photo makes this one of the most accurate buildings in GTA!

muzzynyc  Pro User  says:

You're both right. The GTA building shown is based on St. Patrick's. The real-life building shown next to it is St. John the Divine.

schmuela  Pro User  says:

Thanks, @muzzynyc: that was my point. That the church in the PHOTO is St John the Divine (I say that explicitly in my parenthesis, as well as that the GTA church doesn't look exactly like it.).

So, @mpalumbo4, I still have to disagree with you if you're talking about the church in the PHOTO. Because that is SO St John the Divine.

Yup, based on scmuela's comment and photo this one should be redone with the real cathedral it's based on for maximum effect. They really are stunningly alike :D

I was never talking about the church in the photo.

I was always talking about the GTA screen grab.
